UPDATE (11:15 EDT)
A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Malibu, California, this morning, according to preliminary reports. Tremors were felt across the region, including in Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Orange County and Los Angeles. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Shallow earthquakes, such as one at 10 kilometers, tend to cause more intense shaking at the surface because they are closer to the Earth's crust. The energy released by the earthquake has less distance to travel, so the shaking feels stronger and can cause more damage, especially near the epicenter.
In contrast, deeper earthquakes may lose energy as the waves travel through more layers of the Earth, making them less intense by the time they reach the surface. Therefore, the impact of a shallow earthquake is typically more severe in terms of how it's felt by people and the potential for structural damage.
The shaking from the earthquake lasted for approximately one minute
