Taylor Swift announced her endorsement of the Harris-Walz ticket on Instagram earlier this week, and made a point of referencing his resurfaced “cat lady” comments. Vance fired back, asserting that the American people shouldn't look to out of touch, ultra wealthy celebrities that have no understanding of the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis — and how the Biden-Harris administration has affected those challenges.
The New York Post reports:
Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance called pop superstar Taylor Swift a “disconnected” billionaire Wednesday, one day after she endorsed the Democratic president ticket by invoking his criticism of “childless cat ladies” such as herself.
“We admire Taylor Swift's music, but I don't think most Americans, whether they like her music or are fans of hers or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans. Look, when grocery prices go by 20%, it hurts most Americans. It doesn't hurt Taylor Swift. When housing prices become unaffordable, it doesn't affect Taylor Swift or any other billionaire. It does affect middle class Americans all over our country.”
The pop star mentioned three specific issues in her endorsement of Kamala Harris: LGBT rights, abortion rights, and access to IVF: “I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate [Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz], who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman's right to her own body for decades.”
Some argue that the issues she mention only prove Vance's rebuttal, as the vast majority of the American people list the economy as their number one issue. But because Taylor Swift is a billionaire, she has the luxury of prioritizing social issues with minimal impact on most people's day-to-day lives.
Some followers may find this statement confusing, as President Trump has been on record as supporting gay marriage for decades — and much longer than some of his Democratic contemporaries. While his abortion stance has evolved throughout the years, he wouldn't be the first presidential candidate on either side of the aisle to have changed their position on the issue, and for most of his public life, he was on the record as pro-choice. He's made it clear that he doesn't support Florida's 6 week abortion ban, as he doesn't think it allows women “enough time,” and has stated he wouldn't sign a federal abortion ban if it made it to his desk. He has never opposed IVF — and on the contrary, has voiced intentions to subsidize IVF if reelected.
The New York Post continues:
Polls show abortion rights are one of Trump's major liabilities following the Supreme Court's 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade — though he has advocated for state policies that preserve access in cases of rape, incest and threats to maternal health and rebuked a proposed six-week ban in Florida.
Trump has been especially popular this election cycle among rappers and urban performers, most recently including Puerto Rican reggaeton star Anuel AA.
So why would anyone care how Taylor Swift is going to vote?? She has no more knowledge about the candidates than any other citizen and it is important that we ALL vote based on the facts, not the fame or fortune of another person.
The sick thing is, some folks will base their votes on the endorsement of this brainless bimbo, or other ignorant, isolated celebutards.
