Brent Metz, a 38-year-old city council member from Conifer, Colorado, was arrested after shooting a teenage boy in the face, who claimed he was on the property to ask permission to take homecoming photos. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the 15- and 17-year-old boys visited the neighborhood to take pictures for their high school's homecoming dance.
The teens reportedly attempted to seek permission from the homeowner but found no one home. The female resident, who was inside, called the police and her boyfriend, Metz, after seeing the boys on her fenced-in property.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, the teens parked in front of the gate, hopped the fence and wandered the property looking for someone to ask for permission. Sheriff's spokesperson Jacki Kelley emphasized there was no indication the boys were attempting a robbery.
As the teenagers returned to their car to write a note for the homeowner, Metz arrived, blocking them in with his truck. He then pointed a gun at the car's windshield and fired, striking the 17-year-old. The teen reportedly said, “I am going to die,” but mentioned in the affidavit that he didn't believe Metz shot him intentionally, noting that Metz allegedly exclaimed, “oh s**t, my gun went off” after the shot was fired.
Metz was still at the scene when officers arrived and was arrested. He faces charges of first-degree assault, two counts of felony menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm and two counts of reckless endangerment.
The sheriff's office stated that the boys were not trespassing when Metz allegedly fired at them, as they were on a public roadway at the time. Kelley also noted that charges against the teens were unlikely, as there was no evidence they intended to commit a crime.
Metz was booked on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The injured teen remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Metz, who was elected as a Mountain View city council member last year, is set to remain in office until 2027.
It's unclear if the town of Mountain View will take any further action against him.
