Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) is celebrating a big win for his state and a fulfillment of a campaign promise to bring business back to Virginia, after Boeing announced they’re moving their headquarters to Arlington, Virginia.
Twenty-one years after the aerospace giant moved its headquarters from Seattle to Chicago, they’re on the move again, this time setting up in Northern Virginia, a move that will take them closer to the doorstep of lawmakers and global customers. The announcement was made on May 5th with Boeing President and Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun saying in a statement “We are excited to build on our foundation here in Northern Virginia. The region makes strategic sense for our global headquarters given its proximity to our customers and stakeholders, and its access to world-class engineering and technical talent.”
Moving closer to Washington, D.C. brings a wide range of benefits for the company,
which in recent years has struggled to maintain its good relationship with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and government regulators following a pattern of dwindling safety standards over the past decade. Ever since the two fatal crashes of Boeing’s best-selling 737 MAX jets, which resulted in the FAA grounding the aircraft for almost two years, the company has been on a PR campaign to reinstate faith in the brand, as well as improve relations with the FAA. These struggles were recently compounded when the aviation regulator prevented Boeing from delivering their 787 Dreamliner amid growing quality control issues.
But it is not just proximity to major aviation stakeholders that is bringing Boeing to the Washington metropolitan area. Half of Boeing’s revenue in 2021 came directly from military sales, meaning its new, close proximity to the Pentagon will allow for an expansion and growth of those initiatives and government contracts.
During his campaign for governor, Youngkin promised to make Virginia a hub for business and new jobs. Boeing is one of the biggest exporters in the U.S. and employs around 140,000 people. With this new expansion, it is set to hire many more people in the Arlington area.
In a tweet posted shortly after the announcement, Youngkin praised the company for choosing Arlington as the new home for their headquarters, saying “Boeing is one of America’s great pioneering businesses & I am thrilled the company has decided to
headquarter in VA & look forward to working with them to attract even more talent to VA. From day one, our goal has been to make VA the best place to live, work, & raise a family.”
