Authorities have detained a person of interest – an adult male – after they allegedly threw an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Santa Barbara Superior Courts complex in Santa Maria, California.
According to preliminary reporters, the attack resulted in two non-life-threatening injuries.
First responders found additional explosives and weapons in the individual’s vehicle parked next to the courthouse.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office believes the explosion was caused by a deliberately set improvised explosive device (IED), according to public information officer Raquel Zick.

A witness who spoke to KSBY claimed that they saw someone walk into the courthouse and throw a backpack at security which caused an explosion. The suspect is reported to be an adult male.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office posted a statement on X that the California Office of Emergency Services is “actively monitoring” the situation.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area as it remains unsafe.
The Santa Maria City Hall, including the Finance Department, City Attorney’s Office, Santa Maria Public Library and Recreation and Parks Department are closed for the rest of the day.
