Federal authorities arrested Oran Routh, son of Ryan Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump, after uncovering illicit files containing child pornography during a search of his residence.
Ryan Routh, 58, a convicted felon with 74 prior arrests, is currently being held without bail until his arraignment on Sept. 30. According to a letter he wrote to a friend, the elder Routh had been planning the attack on Trump for months before allegedly pushing the muzzle of a rifle through the fence surrounding Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course.
Following Ryan Routh’s arrest on Sept. 15, authorities searched Oran Routh’s home in connection with his father’s alleged crime. During the search, FBI agents discovered hundreds of digital files containing scenes of child exploitation on two cellphones, one found directly on Oran Routh and another in his bedroom.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Carolina revealed that one of the devices contained an SD card with hundreds of files, including videos from a known series produced outside North Carolina. Oran Routh now faces charges of receiving and possessing illegal material.
ABC News has more on the criminal complaint against the younger Routh:
The complaint included graphic descriptions of the videos and a chat from July in which Oran Routh allegedly responded to someone advertising the content for sale.
Oran Routh will make an initial appearance in North Carolina federal court later Tuesday.
He does not yet have an attorney listed for him.
In a statement following his father’s alleged assassination attempt on Trump, Oran Routh remarked that “every reasonable person” despises Trump.
