SEOUL – The National Intelligence Service (NIS) of South Korea has reported that more than 12,000 North Korean troops, including special forces units, have left the country. According to the Yonhap News Agency, these forces have formed into four combat brigades and are training in Russia’s Far East, with plans to join the ongoing war in Ukraine.
North Korean Troops Sighted in Russia
Footage shared on social media platform X appears to show hundreds of North Korean soldiers undergoing training at a Russian military base near the city of Sergeyevka in the Primorsky Krai region. The area is situated about 100 miles from Russia’s border with North Korea.

Around 1,500 North Korean special forces troops are already in Russia, the NIS added.
If confirmed, it would be the North’s first major involvement in a war since the Korean War in 1950-1953.
It comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday that Ukraine had information that North Korea was preparing to send 10,000 troops to occupied areas of Ukraine.
“We’ve got information that North Korea sent tactical personnel and officers to Ukraine on temporary occupied territories, and they are preparing on their land, 10,000 soldiers, but they didn’t move them already to Ukraine or to Russia,” Zelenskyy said.
Western officials have not yet verified the intelligence. Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder stated on Thursday that the U.S. is investigating the reports.
North Korea’s Aggressive Posturing at Home
Amidst these developments, North Korea has ramped up its military activities along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates it from South Korea. Earlier this week, North Korean forces destroyed roads and railways along the demarcation line.
Additionally, the Kim regime has placed eight artillery brigades on full combat alert, stationing them close to the DMZ. This heightened readiness follows accusations from North Korea that South Korean drones dropped propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang. These allegations further inflamed tensions, leading to increased military posturing on both sides of the border.
