Six House Republicans broke with GOP leadership on Wednesday, joining Democrats to advance legislation that would provide billions of dollars in additional support to Ukraine despite ongoing opposition from President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The House voted 218-204 in favor of a discharge petition that forces consideration of the Ukraine Support Act, a measure that had remained stalled for more than a year after Republican leaders declined to bring it to the floor.

The vote marks one of the most significant bipartisan challenges to Republican leadership on foreign.

In a pointed response to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s latest claims about gun control, the Toronto Police Association (TPA) exposed the flaws in his restrictive policies, emphasizing the ongoing impact on law-abiding citizens and communities facing rising crime rates.

Trudeau’s Empty Promises on Safety

On Monday, Trudeau took to X (formerly Twitter) to boast about his government’s achievements: “Two years ago today, we froze the handgun market and stopped handguns from being bought, sold, or transferred anywhere in Canada. We choose your safety over the gun lobby—every time.” But to many who value personal liberty and the right to self-defense, these claims rang hollow.

Trudeau’s assertion implies that targeting lawful gun ownership would lead to safer streets, but the numbers tell a different story. In response, the TPA, representing 8,000 officers who directly confront the realities of crime, issued a stinging rebuke:

“Criminals did not get your message. Our communities are experiencing a 45% increase in shootings and a 62% increase in gun-related homicides compared to this time last year,” the TPA fired back, adding a critical point that many gun rights advocates have emphasized for years: “What difference does your handgun ban make when 85% of guns seized by our members can be sourced to the United States?”

The Real Impact of Gun Control: Disarming the Law-Abiding

Pro-liberty voices have long argued that gun control measures, like those implemented by Trudeau, primarily disarm law-abiding citizens while doing little to curb access for criminals. The TPA’s statement highlights a fundamental flaw in Trudeau’s approach: a handgun freeze might restrict the rights of responsible owners, but it doesn’t address the flow of illegal firearms into the country. (This aligns with many criticisms of gun control measures in the United States, where restrictive laws often fail to prevent criminals from obtaining weapons through illicit means.)

By focusing on banning the sale and transfer of legal handguns, Trudeau’s government has shifted the burden onto ordinary citizens, leaving them less equipped to protect themselves while violent crime surges. This approach not only infringes on individual rights but also fails to recognize the complex factors contributing to rising crime rates, including cross-border smuggling and the impacts of social and economic upheaval.

Gun Violence on the Rise: A Failed Strategy

Despite Trudeau’s self-congratulation, crime data paints a grim picture. The TPA’s pointed response noted that, under the prime minister’s watch, Toronto has seen a sharp increase in gun violence. The numbers are alarming: a 74% rise in incidents of gun violence compared to 2023—highlighting the ineffectiveness of Trudeau’s restrictions.

While government officials tout reduced auto thefts, such a decrease does little to offset the broader surge in violent crime. Incidents of assault, robbery and homicide have all increased, reflecting a broader national trend of rising crime. These trends reveal a critical reality: stripping citizens of their ability to legally own firearms has not translated into safer streets.

The Pro-Liberty Stance: Empowering Citizens, Not Disarming Them

The exchange between the TPA and Trudeau sheds light on a deeper philosophical divide. While Trudeau and other proponents of strict gun control argue that reducing access to firearms ensures safety, defenders of gun rights maintain that true safety lies in empowering citizens to defend themselves. (In fact, studies in other countries have suggested that lawful gun ownership can act as a deterrent to certain types of crime, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach rather than blanket restrictions.)

This debate goes beyond just statistics. It’s about the fundamental right to self-defense and whether the government’s actions respect that right or undermine it. As the TPA rightly pointed out, policies that focus only on banning legal firearms miss the mark when it comes to addressing the real sources of crime. And as Toronto’s rising crime rates demonstrate, restricting gun rights is no substitute for effective law enforcement and tackling the root causes of violence.

Trudeau’s policies might resonate with those who believe that government should play a greater role in regulating firearms. However, for those who value liberty and the right to self-protection, the TPA’s critique is a reminder that safety and freedom go hand in hand. In the face of rising crime, Canadians deserve policies that empower them, not ones that leave them more vulnerable.
