As Mitch McConnell’s tenure as the leading Senate Republican draws to a close, his unvarnished view of the Republican Party’s direction under Donald Trump has come to light. In his upcoming biography, authored by Associated Press Deputy Washington Bureau Chief Michael Tackett, McConnell offers a candid critique of Trump’s influence on the GOP. The biography, The Price of Power, is set for release one week before Election Day, and its revelations have sparked considerable interest.
In it, McConnell describes former President Trump as “stupid,” “ill-tempered,” “despicable” and “a narcissist” following the 2020 election.
The latest excerpts, first reported by CNN, reveal McConnell’s belief that Trump has weakened the Republican Party’s competitive edge. He is quoted as saying, “The MAGA movement is completely wrong,” adding that Ronald Reagan “wouldn’t recognize” Trump’s GOP, underscoring the sharp departure from the direction he believes the party should take.
He also took aim at some of Trump’s most passionate supporters:
“Trump is appealing to people who haven’t been as successful as other people and providing an excuse for that, that these more successful people have somehow been cheated, and you don’t deserve to think of yourself as less successful because things haven’t been fair,” he said.
The Kentucky Republican did not mince words, calling Trump a “sleazeball,” a “narcissist” and saying that the former president is “stupid as well as being ill-tempered.” He added that Trump is “not very smart, irascible, nasty, just about every quality you would not want somebody to have.”

In a statement to CNN about his comments on the former president in the book, McConnell said, “Whatever I may have said about President Trump pales in comparison to what JD Vance, Lindsey Graham, and others have said about him, but we are all on the same team now.”
The Senate GOP leader and the former president have long had a rocky relationship, which Tackett details in the book. However, McConnell has endorsed Trump, and met with him back in June of this year during Trump’s meeting with Senate Republicans off the Hill.
Despite McConnell’s criticism, recent national polling data presents a different landscape. A Wall Street Journal poll and another from CNBC show Trump maintaining a slight lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in hypothetical matchups. In contrast, quotes from the Senate minority leader suggest that he is firm in his stance, arguing that Trump has harmed the party’s core identity.
“I think Trump was the biggest factor in changing the Republican Party from what Ronald Reagan envisioned,” McConnell stated. He “wouldn’t recognize” it today.
Polling averages from RealClearPolitics offer a different view of the 2024 race, with Kamala Harris leading Trump by a slim 0.2-point margin nationally. Yet, Trump holds a slight advantage in the decisive battleground states, with a 0.9-point lead.
So, what do you think? Will McConnell’s book have an impact, or is it a drop in the bucket compared to life under the Biden-Harris administration? As always, share your thoughts below!

Why do these RINOs wait till just before election date to spread their animosity of the candidate that their party chose to lead them. McConnel is an old war hawk who has made millions with the Military industrial complex along with the majority of congressmen and senators. Just follow the money. I will be pleased to see him go.
I agree! Trump is far from being a perfect Human being, but McConnell is the Self-Centered “SLEEZEBALL that he calls Trump! If we lose this election to Comrad Harris, WE ARE S C R E W E D !!!!!!!!!! We are MILLIMETERS AWAY from becoming part of the One-World Government!
TRUMP is the ONLY, TRUSTED chance we have! The REST are from and represent the “Dark Side”! THAT is how far off course we have gone!
Go away Mitch. You are way past your prime. Ronald Reagan did not have to deal with the same kind of “democrats” that Trump has to deal with. It’s a total separate situation that requires a different political approach. Reagan had to deal with Walter Mondale and Jimmy Carter. Trump has to deal with Biden and Harris. It’s a totally different ball game and there is a lot more to lose.
The turtle speaks. Traitor.
All the names that Mitch the Turtle called Trump is the same reflection old Mitch sees when he looks himself in the mirror This guy has made millions off the backs of us Deplorable taxpayers, foreign entities and even our Military—he never saw a war he didn’t like “WARHAWK” so its good riddance and enjoy your money and Kentucky Mansion !!
(1) Similar to Kamala Harris, McConnell never explains nor defines what he believes a republican should be;
(2) His comments about success doesn’t make sense. This is what I would expect a socialist like Harris to express;
(3) McConell and other rinos have seen to it that our life has drastically changed. Their weakness in office has allowed the decline of the values in this country as well as the American dream of having a wife, a home and family.
Mitch who???
Well, it looks like another member of the deep swamp rears it’s ugly head, Mitch McConnell you should be ashamed of yourself, you and your wife’s involvement in a Chinese company has made you millions,working with the enemy is how most Americans view that, with the state of the country being incomplete shambles and about to get worse with a waltz Harris government, you choose to release your book now, I think it is completely despicable that you would stab the Republicans in the back on your way out, don’t let the door hit you on the ass on your way out You effing traitor.
Although McConnell has served his country for a long time, and more recently, probably the most responsible for keeping the current socialist AG off the Supreme Court, he is also like a jealous old fool. He could never have had the incredible impact that former President Donald Trump has had on recreating the Republican Party into the strong populist movement that puts America First. IMO, he has proven in his later years to be a very selfish, cantankerous, conniving limited talent politician who restricts funding to Republican aspirants he simply does not like despite their potential importance in turning districts. Now, he says he supports Trump’s Presidency on one hand but is about to remove that support with his book – just before the election. Pretty shabby if you ask me.
McConnell needs to look into a mirror. He, probably as much as any other Republican, has consistently contributed to the disastrous situation that has developed since the days of Reagan and accelerated during the George Bush and Obama era. We don’t need him and his detrimental comments. I, for one, will never consider looking at his book because he has basically made the Senate into a non-functional body. He was in the Senate when we went into Afghanistan. He was in the Senate when Obama made the disastrous exit from Iraq. He was in the Senate while the Middle East was becoming more dangerous under Obama. He did little other than judges when Trump was in office the first time. During the Biden era, he has literally accomplished nothing as we watched much of the Trump accomplishments being systematically dismantled by
Biden and the Democrat Socialists. Apparently he is mentally deficient to the point that he does not even understand what worked so well under Trump while ignoring the Biden disasters both economically and internationally. And, we must not forget that he has become a wealthy old man with his direct ties to the Chinese communists. Both he and his book need to be forgotten when the history of the 21st Century is finalized.
