Newport Beach Mayor Blasts California’s Sanctuary Policies After Migrant Arrests At Sea

Good morning.

Congress is mounting its strongest challenge yet to President Trump’s Iran War, federal prosecutors have unveiled a sanctions-evasion case tied to Iran’s nuclear program, and investigators in Washington, D.C., are digging deeper into allegations that police officials manipulated crime statistics.

The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to approve a war powers resolution to limit unauthorized American military involvement in Iran.

Sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the measure would require the White House.

Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill recently criticized California’s sanctuary state policies, which he claims have exacerbated illegal immigration, following the recent detention of 21 migrants off the coast of his affluent coastal city. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 18 of the individuals were from Mexico, while two hailed from Uzbekistan and one from Russia. The migrants were apprehended about a mile offshore and subsequently handed over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

In an interview with Fox News, Mayor O’Neill expressed frustration with what he sees as a failure of state lawmakers, particularly those in the Democratic-controlled legislature, to address the unintended consequences of sanctuary policies. He argued that laws like the “California Values Act” (SB 54) — which prohibits state and local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities — have created an environment where illegal immigration flows largely unchecked, and public safety is put at risk.

SB 54, signed into law in 2017 by then-Governor Jerry Brown, limited cooperation between state and local law enforcement and federal immigration agencies like ICE. The law restricts immigration enforcement in sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals, and courthouses. While its proponents argue that the law protects vulnerable immigrant communities, O’Neill and other critics contend that it has made it harder for local authorities to curb illegal immigration and detain criminal immigrants, especially in coastal communities like Newport Beach.

O’Neill pointed to the recent incident in which 21 migrants were intercepted by the Coast Guard as evidence that illegal entry by sea has become a growing problem. He explained that many migrants, in an effort to avoid traditional border checkpoints, have increasingly used boats to bypass California’s southern border. Once ashore, they are often able to disappear into the state without local law enforcement being able to act. O’Neill expressed particular concern about the limitations imposed on local police, noting that if the boat carrying the 21 migrants had made it to Newport Harbor, local authorities would have had no legal grounds to detain them.

O’Neill also highlighted the broader consequences of sanctuary policies for local communities. He argued that California’s lenient immigration laws, combined with increasing numbers of illegal border crossings, have placed additional strain on already overburdened resources in cities like Newport Beach. Rising homelessness, a backlog in public services, and increasing crime are some of the issues O’Neill attributes to what he sees as California’s failed approach to immigration enforcement.

“The policy in Sacramento is so extreme that they are actually protecting people who are known criminals who are in the country illegally,” O’Neill said.

Republicans have long criticized California’s sanctuary laws, with figures like State Assemblyman Bill Essayli accusing the state’s Democratic leaders of ignoring the negative impacts on public safety and the economy. “They don’t tolerate any dissent to any of their policies at all,” Essayli said, pointing to state lawsuits against local governments that have refused to comply with certain state mandates.

Mayor O’Neill and other local leaders have called for a reevaluation of sanctuary policies, arguing that they are out of step with the concerns of communities struggling to cope with rising crime and the social costs of illegal immigration.

“Gavin Newsom is trying to Trump-proof California. We here in Orange County are trying to Newsom-proof Orange County,” he said. “We know how unsafe our communities have been under his leadership.”

I think when illegals are encountered in California they should all be bused to Newsom’s neighborhood.

About the sanctuary business … “It is a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal illegal immigrants from immigration authorities.”

California is the worst state in the Union at protecting and giving its citizens any kind of break financially. The old adage that California has taxed its citizens to the breaking point is real, our gas tax is the highest in the nation and Newsom is going to raise it again. We have seen almost every major company leave California because of its unfriendliness to big corporations’ small businesses. This last election giving Donald Trump a landslide victory should have opened up the eyes of these progressive leftist politicians like Newsom. It fell on deaf ears; he has already gone public with the same rhetoric attacking Trumps being reelected again like anyone in California cares what Newsom says. The people of California have put up with his nonsense for years now, like the red wave that happened in this election, Californians voted more for the red side than in recent total blue state. We are fed up with the progressive, silly perverted push to make us all WOKE, accepting transgender policies, high taxes and especially our total lack of justice giving criminals more support than regular honest freedom loving citizens. We will support Trump in the coming two years of his total control of the White House, Senate and the Congress. God Bless America.

Illegal immigration affects everyone in the USA, not just the border states.
Because people can go anywhere once here.
Therefore, sanctuary cities or states are illegal themselves.
And they must be stopped by the federal government.
