Ryan Routh, accused of attempting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, referred to Trump as a “dictator” in a four-page jailhouse letter sent to a Politico reporter. The letter, written from Routh’s cell at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center, outlines grievances that echo left-wing critiques of Trump’s presidency and campaign, framing him as a threat to democracy.
The Washington Free Beacon disclosed the contents of Routh’s letter, written while he awaits trial two months after pleading not guilty to all charges:
In the four-page letter, written before the presidential election, Routh warned that if Trump were to win, the United States needed to “remove the power of our military by the President and place it with Congress before January.”
“We must limit all Presidential power before Trump seizes our country,” Routh wrote.
Trump blamed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for inspiring Routh’s attempt, citing Biden’s and Harris’s campaign-trail claims that he is a “threat to democracy.”
“[Routh] believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, and he acted on it,” Trump said. “Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country, and they are the ones that are destroying the country—both from the inside and out.”
Routh, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, allegedly tried to target Trump at his Palm Beach golf course. Prosecutors revealed a cache of evidence during the investigation, including a letter found at Routh’s home in which he predicted the failure of his plan and placed a $150,000 bounty on Trump’s life.
Authorities searching Routh’s vehicle discovered a detailed list of Trump’s appearances in August, September, and October 2024, as well as items such as multiple cell phones (one containing a search for directions to Mexico), extra license plates and a dozen pairs of gloves. Prosecutors also introduced testimony from a witness who received a box from Routh containing ammunition, building materials and correspondence related to his plans.
Judicial Developments
On Sept. 23, a federal judge ordered Routh to remain in custody without bail, citing evidence that prosecutors argued demonstrated the ongoing danger he posed. Routh’s trial is pending.
Context: A Broader Security Threat
Routh’s alleged actions came on the heels of another assassination attempt during Trump’s campaign. At a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire, killing volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore and critically injuring two others. Trump himself was grazed by a bullet. Crooks, armed with a collapsible AR-15-style rifle, was neutralized by a Secret Service sniper moments after firing eight rounds.
Images from the Butler scene show Crooks’ body sprawled on a rooftop alongside a remote detonator and cellphone, both believed to be linked to explosives found in his vehicle.
