Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) are advising U.S. citizens to use encrypted messaging apps to protect their communications in the wake of an unprecedented cyberattack carried out by Chinese hackers targeting major U.S. telecommunications companies, including AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies.

According to a report by NBC News, the hacking campaign, known as “Salt Typhoon,” is one of the most significant intelligence breaches in U.S. history. The Chinese-backed group has reportedly infiltrated the networks of some of America’s largest telecoms, raising concerns about the safety of personal data and communications.

In response to the ongoing cyber threat, officials from both the FBI and CISA are urging Americans to adopt encrypted communication methods as a way to safeguard their data from foreign adversaries. Jeff Greene, executive assistant director for cybersecurity at CISA, emphasized the importance of encryption for both text messages and voice calls. “Encryption is your friend,” Greene said. “Even if the adversary is able to intercept the data, if it is encrypted, it will make it impossible to decipher.”

In the wake of these revelations, both CISA and the FBI have urged Americans to take immediate steps to protect their digital communications. Encrypted messaging apps like Signal, WhatsApp, Google Messages, and iMessage provide end-to-end encryption, meaning that only the sender and recipient can read the messages.

The FBI has also weighed in, recommending that individuals use phones and apps that automatically receive operating system updates, have strong encryption capabilities, and employ phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication for email and social media platforms. These precautions can make it much more difficult for hackers to access sensitive communications, even after they’ve breached systems.

Despite the scale of the breach, U.S. officials have stated that they do not believe the cyberattack was aimed at influencing the 2024 presidential election. Instead, they view it as part of a broader cyberespionage campaign designed to gather sensitive information on U.S. politics, policies, and government activities.

This cyberattack is part of a growing trend of increasingly sophisticated espionage campaigns targeting the United States. With tensions rising between China and the U.S. over issues like trade, security, and technology, this breach is seen as part of a larger effort by foreign actors to gain intelligence and leverage. As the U.S. prepares for the inauguration of Donald Trump, officials are bracing for further attempts to infiltrate U.S. systems, both public and private.

The breach also highlights the vulnerabilities in America’s telecom infrastructure, which has become a key target for foreign hackers due to the wealth of sensitive information contained within these networks. The FBI and CISA have repeatedly warned of the risks posed by cyberattacks, urging businesses, government agencies, and individuals to adopt stronger cybersecurity practices.
