The Texas State Guard (TXSG – State Defense Force) recently celebrated a significant milestone with the graduation of a new class of soldiers from their Recruit Basic Orientation Training (RBOT), commonly referred to as Basic Training.
The TXSG, like similar formations in other states, is distinct from traditional Army and Air National Guard units; it answers only to the governor and cannot be federally activated.
These recruits, many of whom came from civilian backgrounds with no prior military experience, successfully completed all aspects and challenges of this rigorous training program. Designed to transition civilians into capable soldiers, RBOT plays a critical role in the Texas State Guard’s mission to prepare individuals for service in a military environment.
Basic Training in the Texas State Guard is an intensive program that equips recruits with core military skills and knowledge. Over the course of their training, recruits gain proficiency in areas such as military customs and courtesies, map reading, land navigation, basic first aid and the handling of military equipment. The training also emphasizes a deeper understanding of the military chain of command, military law, and the core values that underpin the armed forces. By instilling leadership, integrity and teamwork, the program shapes recruits into disciplined and resilient soldiers, ensuring they are prepared to fulfill their duties effectively within the Guard’s structure. This foundational training sets the stage for their future careers in the Texas State Guard, building a solid base of competence and confidence for their service.
At the conclusion of their training, the soldiers were presented with their Texas State Guard patch and the Texas State Flag patch, a symbolic moment that marked their transformation into official members of the Texas State Guard. These patches represented not only their successful completion of Basic Training but also their commitment to serving the state with honor and dedication.
The culmination of the training was marked by a formal graduation ceremony, where families of the new soldiers gathered to witness their loved ones’ transformation from civilians to proud members of the Texas State Guard. The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Col. Thomas Mitchell, Commander of the 1st Brigade, Texas State Guard, and Command Sgt. Maj. Freddrik Taylor. Their presence underscored the importance of the occasion, celebrating the recruits’ hard work, dedication and readiness to serve the state of Texas with honor and distinction.
