As President Joe Biden’s term draws to a close, top members of his Cabinet insist that he’s fit for office. While some may argue that these public statements are merely part of a well-coordinated show of support, claiming Biden’s competency after it was decided he was unfit to run for a second term highlights a fundamental contradiction at the heart of the Democrats’ narrative.
Despite the president’s declining mental state being an open secret within the Beltway, many of his defenders persist in their assertions that his mental faculties remain intact. Biden’s performance in a June 2024 debate against former President Donald Trump was arguably the most extreme example of this disconnect, ultimately ousting him from the Democratic presidential ticket. Biden, who struggled to string together coherent thoughts and sentences during the debate, had been touted as “sharp” and “prepared” up until that point.
Cabinet officials, from Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, have repeatedly emphasized their unwavering confidence in Biden’s ability to continue serving as president. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo called Biden “one of the most accomplished presidents in American history,” while Pentagon officials, like Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, affirmed their “total confidence” in his ability to make national security decisions.
These statements, however, are becoming increasingly difficult to reconcile with reality, especially as the White House faces mounting scrutiny over Biden’s cognitive decline.
Adding to the growing absurdity of the situation, O’Keefe Media Group recently shared an undercover featuring Robert P. Silvers, Under Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in which he admitted that President Biden’s cognitive decline had become evident within the first 12 to 24 months of his presidency, directly contradicting the reassuring messages from his Cabinet officials. Silvers remarked that Biden was “not the guy he was when he took office,” highlighting how his diminished cognitive abilities had affected his leadership, particularly in high-stakes situations like meetings in the White House’s Situation Room. This admission from a senior DHS official undermines the public narrative pushed by Biden’s Cabinet members, who have steadfastly defended the president’s fitness to serve. The stark contrast between the administration’s public position and the candid, behind-the-scenes acknowledgment of Biden’s cognitive struggles only deepens the skepticism surrounding the Democrats’ handling of this issue and further erodes public trust.
Biden’s cognitive struggles are not the only point of contention in the Democrats’ messaging. For much of his presidency, the administration insisted that inflation was not a problem—or that it was “transitory” despite clear evidence to the contrary. For months in 2021 and 2022, Biden and his team downplayed inflation, dismissing it as a temporary side effect of the pandemic recovery. As inflation soared to historic highs, Biden’s economic team clung to this narrative, ultimately losing credibility with the public.
The administration’s inability—or unwillingness—to accurately characterize the scope of their problems turned into a key vulnerability for Democrats in the 2024 election, where many voters perceived the party as out of touch with their realities.
In the final days of Biden’s presidency, as Cabinet members continue to reiterate their support for his leadership, one must ask: How much of the Democrats’ disastrous 2024 loss can be attributed to their failure to confront uncomfortable truths and their unwillingness to engage honestly with the American people?
