Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, made a surprising announcement on X (formerly Twitter) that she would be withdrawing her name from consideration for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL). While her potential candidacy was a cause for excitement in many Republican circles, her decision to step back has raised questions about what motivated her decision, and if it was a decision she made of her own accord or she didn’t believe DeSantis would choose her.
In her post, Lara Trump expressed deep gratitude for the support she had received from Republicans across the country and in Florida. “After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” she wrote. “I could not have been more honored to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida.”
Her withdrawal follows her previous decision to step down from her role as Republican National Committee (RNC) co-chair as she considered running to replace Rubio, who was nominated by Donald Trump to serve as Secretary of State. While Lara Trump’s exit from the race may appear as a personal choice, the timing and circumstances surrounding it have stirred speculation.
Lara Trump’s name was floated early as a strong contender to replace Marco Rubio as a prominent figure within the party, particularly in the wake of her role as RNC co-chair during one of the most consequential presidential elections in U.S. history, she was considered a favorite among the Republican base to take Rubio’s seat.
However, her decision to withdraw raised eyebrows, particularly within Florida’s political establishment, where some had speculated about the role that Governor Ron DeSantis might have played in discouraging her candidacy. DeSantis, who is responsible for filling the vacancy, was relatively quiet about his decision making process leading up to Lara’s withdrawal.
While DeSantis has not publicly commented on the matter, some sources suggest that his reluctance to support Lara Trump for the Senate could stem from lingering political tensions between him and the Trump family. These tensions have been fueled by the acrimonious relationship between former President Donald Trump and Governor DeSantis during the 2024 Republican primaries.
Several political analysts have speculated that DeSantis might have deliberately refrained from endorsing Lara Trump’s Senate bid as a form of political retribution against her father-in-law. During the 2024 primaries, Trump mounted a fierce campaign against DeSantis, frequently criticizing the Florida governor as an insufficient conservative and an unfit candidate.
Despite being a highly visible figure in Republican politics, some within the GOP had raised concerns about Lara Trump’s qualifications for the Senate seat. While her role at the RNC and her involvement in Trump’s previous campaigns gave her valuable experience, critics argued that all of her resume was the result of nepotism as opposed to genuine political talent, suggesting her prominence was largely due to her familial ties.
Lara Trump hinted at her continued involvement in public service despite stepping back from the Senate race. “I have a big announcement that I’m excited to share in January, so, stay tuned,” she teased in her post. While she did not elaborate on the specifics, it seems clear that she intends to remain a key player in Republican politics in some capacity, with some speculating that she’ll be involved in the Trump administration.
