A U.S. official said Thursday that early indications suggest a Russian anti-aircraft system struck an Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people.
The comments by the U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, came after media reports that Azerbaijani authorities believe a Russian surface-to-air missile caused Wednesday’s crash of the passenger jet traveling from the Azeri capital Baku to Grozny in Chechnya, southern Russia.
The official said that if the indications prove true, they would underscore what the U.S. describes as Russian recklessness in its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian drone strikes have targeted Chechnya in recent weeks, and there was reported drone activity in the nearby Russian regions of Ingushetia and North Ossetia before the crash.
The Kremlin earlier Thursday cautioned against “hypotheses” over the crash.

Are we seeing “THE USUAL SUSPECTS” of TV comedy again?
“Russian air defenses shot down passenger plane coming to Grozny from Baku.” – REALLY?
IF ANTI AIRCRAFT DEFENSE FIRE OR A MISSILE HAD HIT THE EMBRAER 190, IT WOULD HAVE EXPLODED AND DROPPED!
BUT IT ONLY HAD SOME SPLINTER-HOLES IN FUSELAGE (body) AND WINGS!
– AND FLEW ON ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE CASPIAN!
SO, WHAT CAN WE CONCLUDE?
#1 – That plane should NOT have been where it flew – BUT DID ANYONE KNOW THAT?
#2 – There were Ukrainian drones in an attack on Russian targets – WHICH WAS LIKELY UNANNOUNCED!
#3 – Russian air defenses would, indeed, have fired – BUT NOT AT THAT PLANE!
#4 – MOST LIKELY, THEY WOULD HIT A DRONE OR 2 OR 5 – AND THESE WOULD EXPLODE!
#5 – WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN THE SHRAPNEL- OR SPLINTER DAMAGE ON THE PLANE – BUT NOT SHOOT IT DOWN!
# 6 – The splinters had, indeed, even penetrated the passenger room in the body of the plane
– and not unlikely also damaged some technical parts, including radio, and navigation – BUT..
#7 – The plane stayed on operation for several hundred km – obviously flying at lower altitude than usual
– as the body (and possibly, the cockpit) could not maintain the high pressure above 5,000 m.
#8 – THUS, THE PLANE SHOULD HAVE LANDED SAFELY, IN DAYLIGHT AND CLEAR WEATHER – WITHOUT RADAR!
– and videos of its approach in Kazachstan show its landing gear fully extended.
#9 – BUT IT MISSED THE AIRPORT AND RUNWAY – AND CRASHED SHORTLY AFTER – IN A STEEP DESCENT!
AND THIS LATTER IS STILL THE REAL MYSTERY OF THE CASE:
HAD BOTH PILOTS SUFFERED MIND-SHAKING INJURIES? HAD THEY BEEN CONFUSED?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
#10 – THE CAUSE OF THE DISASTER WAS, OBVIOUSLY, NOT WAR DAMAGE – AT LEAST, NOT DIRECTLY!
WE MAY HAVE TO CONCLUDE DAMAGE TO HE PILOT(S): PHYSICAL AND/OR MENTAL!

– COMING FROM THE SEA, SEEING THE AIRPORT, THEY COULD HAVE DONE A VERY FLAT APPROACH!
– THEIR QUASI “DIVING” LANDING APPROACH IS, AFTER MISSING THE RUNWAY, EVEN LESS RATIONAL!
