Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) raised eyebrows—and drew laughs—during a recent appearance on Your World when he praised House Speaker Mike Johnson for being an “honest” politician. Burchett’s remarks, which seemed to double as a swipe at unnamed colleagues, emphasized Johnson’s integrity and martial fidelity, rare qualities, he suggested, in Washington politics.
“He doesn’t cheat on his wife, and I find that very appealing in Washington, D.C.,” Burchett said, prompting host Edward Lawrence to laugh out loud.

As the House of Representatives prepares to reconvene on Friday for the first session of the new year, Johnson’s leadership faces significant challenges. Republicans, who hold a razor-thin majority, are scrutinizing Johnson’s recent bipartisan collaboration with Democrats on a critical funding measure.
The speaker, who has led the chamber since October 2023, cannot afford to lose more than two votes from his own party if he hopes to keep the gavel. Adding to the drama, President-elect Donald Trump threw his weight behind Johnson’s leadership in a show of support earlier this week.
Burchett, when asked whether he would back Johnson’s bid to retain the speakership, offered cautious optimism, while noting he’d make his final decision after discussions with Johnson—and possibly Trump—later in the week.
Burchett described Johnson as a “fine Christian man” and a trusted ally. “He’s been a good friend to me, and there is nobody more honest that I have dealt with in Washington,” he added.
With Johnson’s ability to unite his party hanging in the balance, Friday’s session will be a critical moment for the House—and a test of whether Burchett’s faith in his friend’s integrity is shared by his Republican colleagues.
