Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

In an unexpected moment of self-reflection, David Enrich, a reporter whose work contributed to the smear campaign against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, has expressed regret over his role in the sensational and fabricated narrative surrounding Kavanaugh’s high school years. Enrich’s remarks, made in a conversation with Mark Judge—one of Kavanaugh’s former classmates—have sparked a renewed discussion about media responsibility, journalistic ethics, and the consequences of faulty reporting in high-profile cases.

Enrich, a reporter for The New York Times, was one of the key figures behind the coverage that drove the media frenzy during the confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh. At the heart of the controversy was the allegation by Christine Blasey Ford, who accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were both in high school. Judge, who was falsely implicated as a witness to the alleged assault, became one of the central figures in the spectacle.

Enrich reached out to Judge and conveyed a sense of regret, acknowledging that he had spent a significant amount of time reflecting on his coverage of the Kavanaugh nomination and the impact of his reporting.

“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my role in the Kavanaugh coverage, and I would be happy to talk to you about it at some point,” Enrich said. “For now, I will just say that I have learned some lessons and would probably do certain things differently next time.”

These remarks caught Judge by surprise, especially considering the immense damage caused by the media frenzy and the accusations leveled against both him and Kavanaugh during the confirmation process.

Although Enrich attempted to minimize his own involvement by stating, “I would quibble with the statement that I covered a lot of the Kavanaugh nomination. I believe I co-wrote two articles,” the significance of those articles cannot be downplayed. The two pieces Enrich co-wrote were highly influential and widely circulated, and their sensational claims contributed directly to the media firestorm surrounding Kavanaugh’s nomination.

Judge recounted the emotional toll the experience took on him and his family in his own 2022 book, The Devil’s Triangle

The Kavanaugh confirmation hearings were marked by a bitter battle over allegations of sexual misconduct, with the media often framing the debate in starkly partisan terms. However, as more details emerged, it became clear that the accusations were unsupported by concrete evidence.

While Enrich’s expression of regret is certainly a step in the right direction, it remains to be seen whether this moment of self-reflection will lead to lasting change in his approach to reporting or a broader shift in the media’s approach to sensitive, high-profile stories.

Many mainstream media figures have also recently expressed regret for failing to adequately cover President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline, a topic that has increasingly become a point of contention in the wake of Trump’s victory. With Biden’s gaffes and lapses in memory becoming more pronounced during his presidency, some within the media have openly admitted to their past biases in avoiding or downplaying these issues. This silence, critics argue, has led to an incomplete and misleading portrayal of the president’s abilities. While some media figures have quietly expressed regret over this lack of coverage, others have been more vocal, now grappling with the implications of having allowed such concerns to be sidelined in favor of partisan narratives. This shift in tone reflects a broader realization of the media’s duty to provide a fair and honest assessment of elected leaders, regardless of political affiliation.

What a hollow admission. It’s just like Robert McNamara’s admission in his memoirs that they knew Viet Nam was a lost cause even before the major escalations and the number of our dead was still well below the final number.

What I’ve been waiting for is a charge of perjury for Christine Blasey Ford. I knw the minute I heard her, under oath, that she was lying through her teeth. And Lyndsay Graham said he would go after anyone who perjured themselves in the confirmation hearing. Well, Lyndsay, still waiting.
