The popular short-form video app TikTok will shut down in the United States this Sunday, according to Reuters, as an expected federal ban takes effect. The move marks a significant escalation in efforts to address national security concerns tied to Chinese technology companies.
TikTok, owned by Haidian, Beijing and Cayman Islands-based ByteDance, has faced mounting criticism over allegations that it shares sensitive U.S. user data with the Chinese government. Critics point to China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law, which compels Chinese-owned companies to cooperate with the Communist Party’s intelligence-gathering activities. The app collects a vast array of user data, including locations, browsing habits and biometric information, sparking fears of surveillance and manipulation of public opinion in the U.S.
At the center of the controversy is TikTok’s powerful algorithm, which determines the content users see. Officials in Washington have raised concerns that the algorithm could be exploited to disseminate pro-China propaganda, suppress dissenting voices or spread misinformation to influence American audiences. With a likely ban in place, American users will no longer be able to access the app, even if it remains installed on their devices.

In the wake of TikTok’s impending ban, another Chinese-owned social media platform, RedNote, has seen a surge in popularity, with over half a million users signing up in recent days. While RedNote has not been officially designated a security threat, its Chinese ownership raises familiar concerns. Critics warn that the same data-sharing laws and algorithmic risks could apply.
Thus far, U.S. authorities have not announced any formal action against RedNote. However, its sudden rise and potential implications for user data security may draw regulatory attention in the near future.
