Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

A senior aide to House Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly advised Republican lawmakers against subpoenaing former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson to testify about alleged communications with former Rep. Liz Cheney. The reason? Multiple GOP lawmakers allegedly sent Hutchinson sexually explicit messages, according to complaints received by Johnson’s office.

Reports suggest that these inappropriate texts could come to light if Hutchinson is ever called to testify, potentially plunging Congress into a messy, public scandal involving sexual misconduct by sitting members of the House. For Republicans on Capitol Hill, it appears this concern outweighs any potential value in questioning Hutchinson about Cheney’s alleged conduct during the Jan. 6 investigation.

As the Daily News reports:

Hutchinson served as a whistleblower in the bipartisan House Committee on the Jan. 6 Attack that concluded “former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed,” was responsible for the deadly 2021 storming of the Capitol. Testimony from Hutchinson, a former aide to Republican White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, helped investigators reach that conclusion.

Since winning a House majority in 2022, Republicans led by Johnson and loyal to Trump have committed themselves to investigating those investigators. But when Johnson considered calling for Hutchinson’s phone records in June, an aide reportedly warned that Republicans might not like what he finds.

The unnamed aide allegedly said multiple colleagues had raised concerns with Johnson’s office that “sexual texts from [Congress] members who were trying to engage in sexual favors” with Hutchinson could be found in her phone, according to correspondence reviewed by the Washington Post.

In a subsequent meeting, GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who was tapped to lead the investigation into the Jan. 6 committee, was reportedly given that warning as well. The panel ultimately opted not to subpoena Hutchinson.

Johnson stated that he never advised Loudermilk to subpoena Hutchinson, calling the rumors “much ado about nothing.” Loudermilk said that Hutchinson was already cooperating with the investigation.

Loudermilk’s final report accuses Cheney of witness tampering during her role on the January 6 Select Committee. The report claims Cheney communicated with Hutchinson without her lawyer’s knowledge and calls for an FBI investigation into Cheney’s actions. Loudermilk also alleges the committee suppressed evidence, deleted information and operated outside acceptable legal boundaries.

Cheney, however, has vehemently denied the allegations. She described the report as “malicious and cowardly,” asserting that it’s a political distraction meant to protect President Donald Trump from scrutiny over his role in the Capitol riot. Cheney emphasized that the January 6 Select Committee’s findings were grounded in evidence, including testimony from senior Republican officials.

“No reputable lawyer, legislator or judge would take this seriously,” she added.

Loudermilk countered that his subcommittee’s findings reveal misconduct by the January 6 Select Committee and its leadership. “Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney… These violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the report states, which was shared with Fox News Digital:

Less than two weeks after firing her original attorney and hiring “the attorneys Representative Cheney suggested – Hutchinson sat for her fourth transcribed interview with the Select Committee under unusual circumstances,” the report states.

“Prior to this interview, nearly every interview the Select Committee conducted included approximately a dozen people – including committee staff members, committee counsel, often a Member of the Select Committee, the interviewee, and the interviewee’s legal representation. Most of the interviews were done in large conference rooms or over zoom, allowing space for all participants. Hutchinson’s fourth transcribed interview, however, was vastly different. It consisted of only four people: Representative Cheney, one attorney from the Select Committee, Hutchinson, and Hutchinson’s new counsel. Additionally, instead of the Select Committee conducting the interview in a conference room or virtually, Representative Cheney used her private hideaway inside of the United States Capitol Building,” the report states.

The House Republican report continued that Hutchinson’s testimony to the Jan. 6 committee was crucial, arguing “it is unlikely the Select Committee could make its assertions about President Trump’s mood, attitude, and alleged culpability in the events of January 6” without her comments.

“Hutchinson is mentioned by name in the Select Committee’s Final Report no fewer than 185 times. Inexplicably, the Select Committee discredited the multitude of legitimate witnesses who, under oath, repeatedly refuted Hutchinson’s testimony. These legitimate witnesses include senior government officials and federal agents.”

The January 6 Select Committee report relies heavily on Hutchinson’s testimony, including a dramatic allegation that Trump attempted to seize the steering wheel of a Secret Service vehicle as tensions boiled over.

This assertion, however, has been disputed by Anthony Ornato, the former assistant director of the Secret Service, highlighting the ongoing debates surrounding the events of that day.

I say let the hide go with the hair. If Hutchinson lied under oath and it was at the behest of Cheney, this is something that needs to be brought out. If congressmen sent Hutchinson sexually explicit texts trying to bed her, they need to man up and accept their responsibility. Saving our Republic is much more important than saving the reputations of ne’erdo well congress critters.

I am sure Cheney was well aware of the Congressmen “sexting” Hutchinson. Cheney probably banked on nothing being brought up against her because she already knew she would present the text to confirm what was sent to Hutchinson in support of any actions she, Cheney, took in and for the Committee. Those Congressmen involved in “sexting” Hutchinson or anyone else must be identified and dealt with according to rules of conduct of Congressressional staff and if any laws violated prosecuted. If you want to clean up Congress, here is the Republicans’ chance to do what they have spent a number of years claiming they want to do.
