In a high-profile legal battle, CBS News is being forced to hand over an unedited transcript and camera feeds of its 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, following a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump.
The controversy centers on a 60 Minutes interview with Harris, aired just days before the presidential election. Trump’s legal team alleges that CBS manipulated the interview’s editing to present Harris in a more favorable light. The lawsuit claims that CBS’ editing distorted the content of Harris’ answers, making her appear more coherent and composed than she was in the full, unedited version. Trump’s camp argues that this was a deliberate attempt to influence voters during a critical period in the election cycle, accusing CBS of engaging in “partisan and unlawful acts of voter interference.”
In her original answer, she rambled, “Well, Bill, the work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region.”
In the version uploaded to YouTube, she decisively stated, “We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.”
The FCC sent a letter of inquiry to CBS News, demanding the full, unedited transcript and camera feeds of the interview. CBS, initially resistant to releasing raw interview footage, confirmed it would comply with the request on the grounds of legal obligation.
As CBS prepares to hand over the requested materials, discussions about a potential settlement between Trump’s legal team and CBS’ parent company, Paramount, have been circulating. Reports suggest that executives at Paramount, including its controlling shareholder Shari Redstone, are strongly in favor of settling with Trump, fearing that a prolonged legal battle could harm the company’s business interests, particularly its efforts to secure government approval for its multibillion-dollar merger with Skydance Media. While no formal settlement has been reached, sources suggest that the ongoing talks could resolve the dispute, with Trump’s team seeking a significant financial settlement.
“President Donald J. Trump is committed to holding those who traffic in deception and fake news accountable,” Trump’s lawyer Ed Paltzik said in a statement. “CBS and its parent company Paramount deceived the American people by unlawfully tampering with their interview of Kamala Harris.”
The network maintains that no part of Harris’ answer was intentionally hidden or misrepresented and that the interview was edited simply for brevity and clarity. CBS also insists that its editorial decisions are protected under the First Amendment, asserting that media organizations should have the right to control how their content is presented.
