Will Advanced Chinese Tech Detect And Sink US Submarines?

The U.S. can’t allow it—America’s reliance on its super stealthy attack and ballistic missile submarines may be tested by China’s bleeding edge anti-submarine warfare developments.

Without equivalent American countermeasures, the U.S. Navy may need to reevaluate its underwater warfare operations.

This could mean keeping its subs from getting too close to the most likely conflict zones in the South China Sea or Taiwan Strait, which could mean losing a war.

As part of its race to replace the United States as the world’s dominant superpower by 2049, China is running at warp speed to build a world-class navy that can challenge the U.S., especially underwater.

To that end, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) are on a tear developing multiple advanced technologies that could ultimately find and defeat U.S. subs anywhere near China.

First, according to the South China Morning Post, Chinese scientists have created a new detection system that they claim can track submarines better than any other existing technology.

Called the “Underwater Great Wall,” this system attached to the seabed employs an indirect, electromagnetic (EM) signal tracking approach that can detect the faintest of signals from rival submarines.

Popular Mechanics explains:

The device is reportedly the size of a pickup truck, and the team tested it on a deep ocean seabed in the South China Sea… Submarines generally detect other submarines using sonar, which emits sound waves and analyzes the echoes that reflect from underwater objects. However, this detector doesn’t use sonar. Rather, it depends on an antenna that detects low-frequency EM waves that submarine propellers generate with each rotation. When the waves contact the seabed, they continue moving through the rock. They don’t weaken nearly as fast in the seabed as they do in seawater, so detection is easier at farther ranges.

This EM tech has reportedly succeeded in detecting surface ships, 1.86 miles away. However, scientists on the new detection project claim that their system could eventually detect faint EM signals from submarines at a distance of over 30 miles.

In another potential breakthrough, PopMech reports:

[Chinese scientists have] revealed their advancements with Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). These “measure extremely weak magnetic fields” and help make it nearly impossible for a U.S. submarine to slip by unnoticed. While China doesn’t actually have this technology at present, SQUIDS could radically improve submarine detection in the future.

Another technology China has developed is laser-equipped satellites that can detect submarines operating deep beneath the ocean, as far as 525 feet. Similarly, China has floated thousands of sensor-equipped balloons that hover silently above the South China Sea, tracking the wakes of vessels passing through that heavily trafficked region.

Like SQUIDS, a fully realized low-frequency detector could be a game-changer for China, and this ongoing research may mean it’s closer to being deployed.

Satellites could also employ quantum gravimeters to improve the sensitivity of sensors designed to detect and measure gravity fields and potentially detect submarines.

Just as likely, this quantum tech could map out seafloors with new levels of precision.

The U.S. cannot afford yet another “Sputnik moment,” such as the one we just witnessed with China’s DeepSeek AI search engine chatbot, but China may be on the verge of doing just that with quantum antisubmarine warfare technology.

In a separate analysis, Popular Mechanics reports:

When it comes to spearheading the naval arms race towards quantum sensor integration, China appears to be winning. However, the U.S. and its allies in the Pacific and Europe are also making major investments in quantum technologies for naval warfare, with France being first to adopt quantum gravimeters for operational use in 2024.

To date, the nonprofit, nonpartisan research and educational Information Technology and Innovation Foundation estimates that China’s government has spent over $15 billion on quantum research—though the figure is debated, as Beijing’s budgeting is notoriously opaque. The U.S. has reportedly spent $3.8 billion.

Though Congress has passed resolutions calling on the Pentagon to close the gap with China, U.S. defense spending on quantum systems remains tentative, due to the immaturity of many existing quantum technologies.

It is crystal clear that America must dramatically ramp up its AI and quantum technology game, or our submarines may not be able to get to the fight without being detected and sunk.

 And that could cost us the war.
