Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

Leaving multiple government departments without effective leadership…

Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) has announced his intention to delay confirmation of all Trump administration diplomatic nominees until the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is fully operational again.

The agency, responsible for administering foreign aid, has been at the center of recent political maneuvering. On Sunday night, over 600 USAID employees were reportedly locked out of the agency’s computer systems. Those still able to access their accounts received an email stating that, “at the direction of Agency leadership,” headquarters would be closed to personnel on Monday, Feb. 3.

The shutdown follows comments from Elon Musk, who has been leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. During a discussion on X Spaces, Musk revealed that President Donald Trump agreed with closing USAID, aligning with the administration’s broader effort to reassess U.S. foreign aid priorities.

Musk claimed that the shutdown process is already in motion. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been appointed as acting director of USAID, signaling a potential realignment of the agency with the administration’s foreign policy objectives.

Rubio argued that USAID’s functions should align with U.S. foreign policy under the current administration, calling the agency “completely unresponsive.”

The Wall Street Journal highlights Schatz’s decision to enforce a blanket hold on Trump’s nominees, threatening to derail the new president’s ambitious agenda:

The Senate typically speeds up the confirmation of many nominees through “unanimous consent,” a process that bypasses a formal vote if no senator objects. By objecting, Schatz’s hold would halt the Senate’s ability to move nominees quickly, requiring Senate Majority Leader John Thune to use precious floor time to advance the president’s picks through the confirmation process.

“I will oppose unanimous consent,” he told The Wall Street Journal. “I will vote no. I will do maximal delays until this is resolved.”

Schatz’s move would leave several bureaus and offices without senior leadership, complicating U.S. diplomatic efforts and the administration’s ability to speak with a clear voice about its foreign priorities.

Representatives for the White House and State Department didn’t immediately return requests for comment.

The Trump’s administration’s approach to USAID drawn sharp criticism from congressional Democrats en masse. Speaking from Capitol Hill, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) condemned the White House’s maneuvering, arguing that Congress should have a role in deciding foreign aid allocations and accusing Trump of starting a dictatorship.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, looked pale decrying the administration’s focus on domestic issues over international development.

Regardless, Musk continues to vigorously defend the administration’s approach, suggesting that shutting down certain government programs could significantly reduce the national deficit.

“I think we can cut the deficit by $1 trillion next year,” Musk stated, predicting that such reductions would lead to lower interest rates, decreased credit card and mortgage costs and more affordable consumer goods.

“This is a great outcome for Americans, and I think we can achieve it,” he added.

I hope President Trump can get his nominees confirmed and do something about all the liberal democratic congressmen and senators. They are so shameful.

C’mon guys! Enough of the clickbait! “NO Trump Nominees Until This Happens”?! Then your story relays the truth which is “delay confirmation”. You have to be better than this “the little boy who cried wolf” approach….

Keep up the good work Elon. I’ve been saying the government is wasting our money. I think DODG is what we have needed for a long time

I believe Marco Rubio (USAID Director) pretty well says it all. They have not been cooperating as far as accounatbility for how the funds are dispersed….which says “SHUT ‘ER DOWN” to me!!! But it figures that many D’s are involved here in the protests…..no doubt, shaking in their shoes, hoping they do not get caught money laundering.
