A recent CBS News poll, conducted from February 5-7, reveals that President Donald Trump is experiencing his highest approval rating across both of his terms, with 53% of voters expressing approval of his leadership so far. This marks a significant early endorsement just weeks into his second term, showing widespread public support.
CBS News Elections and Surveys Executive Director Anthony Salvanto, who appeared on Face the Nation, highlighted that one of the key takeaways from the poll is that voters believe Trump has largely followed through on his campaign promises. A staggering 70% of those surveyed stated that Trump is delivering on his vows, whether they approve of him or not. This perception is a crucial factor, as it signals that Trump’s continued focus on his campaign promises—such as immigration reform, foreign affairs, and reducing government waste—is resonating with voters.
Salvanto emphasized, “He’s doing, in the eyes of the public, what he said he would do in the campaign. There’s political value in that.” The positive sentiment extends beyond policy to Trump’s leadership style. Many Americans continue to see him as tough, energetic, and focused, with 69% describing him as tough, 63% saying he is energetic, and 60% calling him focused.
The survey also found that 49% of respondents felt Trump was doing more than they had expected in his first few weeks, while 41% thought he was meeting their expectations. A small minority, 9%, believed he was doing less than expected.
Despite the positive outlook on several key issues, there are some areas where Trump’s administration faces mixed feedback, particularly concerning the economy. The poll revealed that 66% of Americans felt the administration was not focusing enough on lowering the prices of goods and services. This sentiment points to a growing concern over rising costs, with 47% of respondents saying that prices in general were increasing, and only 41% reporting that prices were staying the same.
While 33% of those surveyed said their gas prices had gone up, 63% reported an increase in egg prices.
This is likely related to the egg shortage due to a bird flu outbreak during the Biden administration, where farmers were ordered to slaughter and dispose of affected poultry, significantly driving up the price of one of the most common grocery items for American families.
Trump’s handling of international issues, such as the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, also garnered positive feedback. The poll showed that 54% of Americans approve of his leadership on this issue, while 46% disapprove. Trump’s recent proposal to “take over” the Gaza Strip to bring peace to Palestinians, sparked mixed reactions. While 47% of respondents expressed disapproval of the idea, 40% were uncertain, and 13% believed it was a good plan.
