Police have arrested an armed man with burglary tools in the immediate vicinity of Brett Kavanaugh’s home.
A Supreme Court spokeswoman announced that officers apprehended the man at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday on a nearby street.
He allegedly told police he hoped to kill the Supreme Court justice.
As The Washington Post reports:
The man, described as being in his mid-20s, was found to be carrying at least one weapon and burglary tools, these people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. Police were apparently notified that the person might pose a threat to the justice, but it was not immediately clear who provided the initial tip, these people said. The man apparently did not make it onto Kavanaugh’s property in Montgomery County but was stopped on a nearby street, these people said.
Two people familiar with the investigation said the initial evidence indicates that the man was angry about the leaked draft of an opinion by the Supreme Court signaling that the court is preparing to overturn Roe. v. Wade, the 49-year-old decision that guaranteed the constitutional right to have an abortion. He was also angry over a recent spate of mass shootings, these people said.
All that is known publicly about the suspect so far is that he is from California.
Supreme Court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe provided additional details to The Post:
“The man was armed and made threats against Justice Kavanaugh,” McCabe said. “He was transported to Montgomery County Police 2nd District.”

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) responded to the disturbing reports in a speech on the Senate floor with an explicit message for House Democrats.

UPDATE: We now know the identity of Justice Kavanaugh’s accused attempted murderer.
The suspect’s name is Nicholas John Roske.
The New York Times reports two deputy U.S. marshals saw Roske, 26, of Simi Valley, California, as he stepped out of a taxi cab in front of the justice’s house in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Roske was dressed in all black and carrying a suitcase containing “a black tactical chest rig and tactical knife, a Glock 17 pistol with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, nail punch, crowbar, pistol light, duct tape, hiking boots with padding on the outside of the soles, and other items,” according to the affidavit.
The Times describes what Roske did after seeing the deputies standing next to their parked car.
Soon after, the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center received a call from Mr. Roske, who said he was having suicidal thoughts and had a firearm in his suitcase, according to the affidavit.
He said he had traveled from California to Maryland “to kill a specific United States Supreme Court Justice,” the affidavit said.
Officers from the Montgomery County Police Department arrived and found Mr. Roske still on the phone with the communications center.

Mr. Roske told the police that he had begun thinking “about how to give his life a purpose” and decided to kill a Supreme Court justice after finding his address online, the affidavit stated [emphasis added].
If convicted, Roske faces up to 20 years in prison.
