Squad Member Rallies Around Temporary Protected Status For Haitian Migrants

Rep. Ayanna Pressley is calling for an extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals, arguing that the issue is both an economic and humanitarian priority as legal challenges over the program intensify.

A member of the progressive bloc known as “the Squad,” Pressley insisted in a recent post on X that Haitian TPS holders are deeply embedded in American communities. “They’re our neighbors, restauranteurs, and community members who are like family,” she wrote, adding that lawmakers “must extend TPS for Haiti and protect the workers who make our communities feel like home.”

Pressley also amplified a video message underscoring the role Haitian migrants play in the American workforce, particularly in service industries. The speaker described TPS holders as “cooks, dishwashers, servers, managers and owners,” calling them “experienced, reliable, legally authorized workers” who have spent years—sometimes decades—working and raising families in the United States under the protections the program provides.

The video Pressley shared claimed that terminating TPS could have immediate ripple effects across local economies. Restaurants, small businesses, and supply chains could face disruption if a significant portion of their workforce is suddenly removed. “You cannot remove a vital workforce and expect small businesses or communities to survive the shock,” the speaker said, framing the issue as both a labor and supply chain challenge.

At the same time, critics of extending TPS argue that the policy raises broader concerns about labor markets and long-term immigration trends. Some economists and policy analysts contend that large inflows of migrant labor—particularly in lower-wage sectors such as hospitality, food service, and certain areas of health care—can place downward pressure on wages for native-born and earlier-arrived workers competing for similar jobs. They argue that an expanded labor supply may benefit employers and help keep consumer prices lower, but can also reduce bargaining power for American workers.

Coverage citing the U.S. Department of State’s 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report has noted that thousands of Haitian police officers have left the country since 2022, with many believed to have migrated to the United States. Additional reports have highlighted a broader “brain drain,” including estimates that a significant share of Haiti’s critical and higher skilled professionals have also emigrated amid ongoing gang violence and political instability.

Data highlighted in a January report by The New York Times points to the significant role TPS holders play in key sectors of the economy. At least 50,000 migrants with protected status are employed in health care, with Haitians alone holding approximately 111,000 health care jobs in 2023. In cities like Springfield, Ohio where more than 10,000 Haitians have settled in recent years and made national headlines during the 2024 election cycle, migrants are working across hospitals, clinics, warehouses, and factories.

Nursing homes and senior care centers in states with large Haitian populations; particularly in Florida, New York, and Massachusetts.

The push for extending protections comes as the Supreme Court of the United States prepares to hear arguments in late April over whether the Trump Administration can proceed to end TPS for roughly 350,000 Haitians and more than 6,000 Syrians. Lower courts have previously blocked the effort, setting the stage for a high-stakes legal decision.

Pressley’s advocacy reflects a broader debate in Washington over the future of TPS programs, which were originally designed to provide temporary refuge to nationals of countries facing crises such as natural disasters or armed conflict.
