A recent Harvard CAPS / Harris poll reveals a significant shift in voter sentiment as President Donald Trump enjoys a higher approval rating than his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, after one month into his second administration. According to the February poll, Trump has an approval rating of 52%, with 58% of voters expressing greater satisfaction with the current president compared to the previous one. This marks a notable increase in Trump’s popularity as Americans begin to reassess their views on the government and its leadership.
Mark Penn, co-director of the Harvard CAPS / Harris poll, commented on the findings, noting, “People are taking a generally positive wait-and-see attitude for Trump but have really reassessed their attitudes toward Biden, Harris, and the Democrats, taking a much harsher, more negative attitude,” Penn said in a press release. “Trump has a real opportunity here – we’re seeing a healthy, trudging approval edging toward real approval based on how the next couple of months turn out.”
Trump’s policies have garnered widespread support, particularly his initiatives to deport illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds, audit government expenditures to eliminate fraud and waste, and dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within federal agencies. The poll indicates that a majority of Americans are in favor of these policies, reflecting a shift toward prioritizing government efficiency and national security.
One policy, however, faced less support than others—Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which only received 39% approval. Despite this, the majority of voters seem to favor Trump’s broader agenda.
A significant 77% of voters believe a comprehensive examination of government spending is necessary, and 70% agree that inefficiencies and waste are prevalent within federal expenditures. As the newly-established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) audits federal agencies for unnecessary spending, these figures suggest widespread support for reform efforts aimed at improving government operations.
The survey also highlights an increase in voter optimism, with 42% of respondents indicating they believe the country is on the right track—a 14-point increase from the previous month. As Trump gains traction, the Democratic Party’s approval rating has hit a low, with only 33% of voters expressing approval, compared to 49% approval for the Republican Party. These numbers signal a potential shift in the political landscape as Trump and the GOP continue to gain support.
As the Trump administration settles into its second term, the nation watches closely to see how these new policies and leadership changes will impact the country in the coming months. The public’s response to Trump’s efforts to reform government efficiency, prioritize immigration enforcement, and overhaul bureaucratic agencies will likely set the stage for midterms in 2026.
With rising voter satisfaction and increased optimism about the country’s direction, the Republican Party appears to be gaining ground in a political landscape once dominated by Democrats. However, with ongoing legal challenges and opposition from Democrats, what Trump will be able to accomplish in his second administration and how many promises he will be able to fulfill in the first months of his presidency remains to be seen.
