Elon Musk has suggested that former police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of the murder of George Floyd in 2020, could be pardoned. In a post on social media, Musk commented, “Something to think about,” after reposting a video by conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, who called for Chauvin’s pardon. This suggestion has reignited intense debate surrounding the case and its broader implications.
Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter after his role in the death of George Floyd. Floyd’s death, which occurred during an arrest on May 25, 2020, was captured on video, showing Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck. The footage sparked worldwide protests, led by the Black Lives Matter movement, demanding police reform among other progressive causes. Chauvin’s conviction was seen by many liberals as a moment of accountability, while many conservatives believed facts were overlooked to appease the masses.
Shapiro and The Daily Wire, where he is a leading voice, have launched a campaign calling for Chauvin’s pardon. They argue that Chauvin’s conviction was a product of political and social pressures rather than a fair and impartial trial. According to Shapiro, the conviction of Chauvin became a symbol of the “Woke movement,” suggesting that the case was a defining moment for politically charged justice. Shapiro claims that Floyd’s death was not directly caused by Chauvin’s knee on his neck but was instead the result of Floyd’s significant health issues, including a pre-existing heart condition and drug use, particularly fentanyl. He also questions the severity of Chauvin’s actions, suggesting that at certain moments during the encounter, Chauvin’s knee was not even on Floyd’s neck.
Musk, who has become increasingly vocal about political and social issues in recent years, shared Shapiro’s video and added his own comment, asserting that the idea of pardoning Chauvin was worth considering. The proposition has elicited strong reactions across the political spectrum, with some questioning Musk’s motives and the implications of his public support for such a pardon.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who played a key role in prosecuting Chauvin, condemned the pardon initiative. Ellison stated that a potential pardon would not “free” Chauvin from his sentence since he is also serving a state sentence. He called the pardon idea an expression of “disrespect for George Floyd and more disrespect for the rule of law,” though Ellison had no such criticism of Joe Biden’s mass pardons on his way out of office. Ellison insisted that Chauvin’s conviction was based on overwhelming evidence and was a significant step in holding law enforcement accountable for their actions.
Despite these criticisms, the movement to pardon Chauvin has gained traction, particularly those critical of “woke” culture and the criminal justice system’s handling of high-profile cases like Floyd’s. The push for Chauvin’s pardon has also sparked discussions about the politicization of the justice system.
Chauvin, who is currently serving a 22-and-a-half-year federal prison sentence, is also facing separate charges related to violating Floyd’s civil rights. His legal team has recently pushed for a new trial, citing new theories regarding Floyd’s cause of death. This new legal argument has led to motions for further examination of Floyd’s autopsy, which Chauvin’s defense team hopes will support their case.
Figures like Shapiro, Musk, and others on the conservative side of the spectrum argue that the Floyd case has been co-opted by political forces seeking to undermine traditional systems of law and order, while critics contend that the case highlighted deeply entrenched racial inequalities in policing and the criminal justice system.
The death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests were deeply polarizing events in the United States, reflecting a growing divide between those advocating for social justice reforms and those who believe the movement is emotionally driven and empowers mob rule.

I understand that his autopsy showed Floyd had more than enough drugs in his system to kill more one person. The socialists had a blast with this one. So embarrassed that these American haters have do much power.
Derek Chauvin: a PURELY POLITICAL case!! Give this brave Police officer a COMPLETE PARDON! Keith Ellison deserves a sentence, Walz deserves a sentence and CHAUVIN a PARDON! I lived in MN whilst this tirade of ‘Peaceful Protestin” was allowed to burn the city! I left MN after the AG, Governor and MN mayor put the blame on a Police officer. It was a Set up. turn it around and convict those who did the set up! These are the ugly hateful democrats!!
see the movie “fall of minneapolis” on utube….produced by liz collins of ALPHA NEWS in minnesota….you will be disgusted how ellison and mayor of minneapolis railroaded this conviction…all 4 officers s/b pardoned and given back pay…5 time convicted felon resisting arrest while committing his 6th felony and high on fentynol….complete miscarriage of justice
Chauvin was a scapegoat. He was railroaded by Minnesota Dems, the MSM & Antifa/BLM radicals who needed a dead body from which to fundraise and race-bait. It was highly suspicious that the longer arrest video– with George Floyd’s mouth showing flecks of foam & a cop asking him if he was “on something” (Floyd declined to say but kept mumbling)- when he was finally put into an arrest vehicle, with difficulty as he was a large, heavyset man- he said he couldn’t breathe and asked to get out so he could lie on the ground. The cops indulged his request and got him out of the vehicle to let him lie on the ground. The despicable people behind the elevation of a career criminal/violent felon, a drug abuser who’d just been accused of passing counterfeit currency, to the elevation of a saint was remarkable. People rushed to judgement- not even waiting for Floyd’s autopsy or toxicology report (the initial reports not only showed there was no sign of asphyxiation or suffocation, but also showed that Floyd had a lethal dose of fentanyl in his system along with THC & meth)… none of that mattered to the MSM and radical Democrats who used Floyd’s body to create mayhem, incite mass looting, rioting and arson that went on for months, burning our cities & killing at least 2 dozen people- inc. former police chief David Dorn. If Floyd had admitted his drug use, he would have been rushed to an ER & treated with naloxone, which may have saved his life. It’ was absurd from the getgo to believe a smallish cop like Chauvin (5 ft 8, 140 lbs) who was not bearing down on Chauvin, would have exerted enough force to suffocate him. Chauvin needs to be made whole– he should sue the City of Minneapolis which tainted the jury pool by awarding Floyd’s family $millions BEFORE his trial. Chauvin was essentially denied due process, subjected to a Soviet-style kangaroo court.
