Democratic Rep Says Trump Supporters Want Blacks ‘Picking Cotton’

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) recently made a controversial statement during a virtual event, claiming that President Donald Trump and the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement aim to push black Americans “back to picking cotton.” Johnson’s remarks, which tied concerns about the defunding of public education to the idea of returning Black Americans to a past of subjugation, have provoked criticism for their inflammatory and baseless rhetoric.

During the event, Johnson expressed concern about policies he believes are undermining public education, particularly the defunding of schools at the federal level and the increasing flow of public funds into private for-profit schools. He suggested that these developments would have a detrimental impact on black communities, claiming it would make education “unavailable to black people.” He further added that this situation would lead Black Americans to a situation akin to when “America was great,” referencing the era of slavery when African Americans were forced to work in the cotton fields.

In his words, Johnson warned of a future where Black Americans are relegated to labor similar to what is often performed by migrant Latino workers, arguing that these policies were intended to “confine” Black Americans to the type of work historically associated with slavery. He then raised alarm about what he perceives as a “movement towards the past” driven by Trump and the MAGA movement, stressing that “it’s the people that will save our democracy” from this direction.

This rhetoric is not new from the left. In 2012, then-Vice President Joe Biden similarly warned that Republicans, specifically Mitt Romney, were pushing a policy agenda that would “put y’all back in chains.” Biden’s remarks were met with criticism at the time, and Johnson’s recent comments have reignited the same backlash. Critics argue that such statements rely on fearmongering and a distorted version of reality, attempting to connect unrelated policies to the historical legacy of slavery without evidence to support such claims.

There is no factual basis for Johnson’s assertions. During his presidency, Donald Trump signed legislation that increased federal funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), marking a notable step in improving support for black education. Furthermore, Trump garnered a significant portion of the black vote in the election, signaling that many black Americans did not view his policies as an assault on their rights or well-being.

Johnson’s comments also overlook the benefits that school choice initiatives—such as allowing parents to send their children to schools outside of failing public institutions—could bring to disadvantaged communities. School choice is often championed as a way to provide more educational opportunities to students in underperforming schools, particularly in communities of color. There is no credible evidence to suggest that these reforms, or the shift toward privatizing education, would somehow lead to a return to slavery or economic servitude.

The remarks by Rep. Johnson reflect a broader trend of rhetoric that seeks to exploit fear of regressive policies by invoking slavery and oppression, even when those claims are not supported by the evidence. As with Biden’s 2012 statement, Johnson’s inflammatory words seem designed to inflame emotions rather than engage in a thoughtful discussion of policy and its real-world implications.

School choice, tax policies, and federal education funding should be debated based on their merits and outcomes, not through hyperbole and historical misrepresentation. For the sake of an informed public, it’s critical that lawmakers and their supporters engage in these discussions with accuracy and integrity, not by invoking the specter of slavery to score political points.
