Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) recently made a controversial statement during a virtual event, claiming that President Donald Trump and the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement aim to push black Americans “back to picking cotton.” Johnson’s remarks, which tied concerns about the defunding of public education to the idea of returning Black Americans to a past of subjugation, have provoked criticism for their inflammatory and baseless rhetoric.
During the event, Johnson expressed concern about policies he believes are undermining public education, particularly the defunding of schools at the federal level and the increasing flow of public funds into private for-profit schools. He suggested that these developments would have a detrimental impact on black communities, claiming it would make education “unavailable to black people.” He further added that this situation would lead Black Americans to a situation akin to when “America was great,” referencing the era of slavery when African Americans were forced to work in the cotton fields.
In his words, Johnson warned of a future where Black Americans are relegated to labor similar to what is often performed by migrant Latino workers, arguing that these policies were intended to “confine” Black Americans to the type of work historically associated with slavery. He then raised alarm about what he perceives as a “movement towards the past” driven by Trump and the MAGA movement, stressing that “it’s the people that will save our democracy” from this direction.
This rhetoric is not new from the left. In 2012, then-Vice President Joe Biden similarly warned that Republicans, specifically Mitt Romney, were pushing a policy agenda that would “put y’all back in chains.” Biden’s remarks were met with criticism at the time, and Johnson’s recent comments have reignited the same backlash. Critics argue that such statements rely on fearmongering and a distorted version of reality, attempting to connect unrelated policies to the historical legacy of slavery without evidence to support such claims.
There is no factual basis for Johnson’s assertions. During his presidency, Donald Trump signed legislation that increased federal funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), marking a notable step in improving support for black education. Furthermore, Trump garnered a significant portion of the black vote in the election, signaling that many black Americans did not view his policies as an assault on their rights or well-being.
Johnson’s comments also overlook the benefits that school choice initiatives—such as allowing parents to send their children to schools outside of failing public institutions—could bring to disadvantaged communities. School choice is often championed as a way to provide more educational opportunities to students in underperforming schools, particularly in communities of color. There is no credible evidence to suggest that these reforms, or the shift toward privatizing education, would somehow lead to a return to slavery or economic servitude.
The remarks by Rep. Johnson reflect a broader trend of rhetoric that seeks to exploit fear of regressive policies by invoking slavery and oppression, even when those claims are not supported by the evidence. As with Biden’s 2012 statement, Johnson’s inflammatory words seem designed to inflame emotions rather than engage in a thoughtful discussion of policy and its real-world implications.
School choice, tax policies, and federal education funding should be debated based on their merits and outcomes, not through hyperbole and historical misrepresentation. For the sake of an informed public, it’s critical that lawmakers and their supporters engage in these discussions with accuracy and integrity, not by invoking the specter of slavery to score political points.

The Tyrants democrats have lost their Minds They Caused All of America’s Problems America Vote Out the Tyrants democrats and liberals and progressives in Every Election
Another example of democrat projection. It is the democrats that have reenslaved most of the black population, with one black leader recently calling conservative, Trump-voting blacks “escaped slaves.”
Hank Johnson evident does not know his history on His, cotton picking idiocy, my mom was dragging a Cotton sack behind her before this racist was ever born. MY FAMILY WAS SHARE CROPPERS IN N. FLORIDA BEFORE THIS RACIST WAS EVER BORN, I COULD KEEP GOING, BUT, WHAT IS THE POINT, HE IS A NON-BELIEVER IN SO MANY AREAS, IT WOULD NEVER GET THRU TO HIM.
IN THIS DAY AND AGE, THAT IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS STATEMNT FROM ANYONE WHO HAS AN OUNCE OF INTELLIGENCE. YEAH, TRUMP AND REPUBLICANS ARE GOING TO MAKE YOU SLAVES AGAIN AND PUT YOU ON PLATATIONS FOR PICKING COTTON AND FRUITS. REALLY? ANYONE WITH A PENNY SENSE OF INTELLIGENCE IS NOT EVEN GOING TO GIVE THIS STATEMENT A SECOND OF THOUGT. FIRST ITS RACISM THEY CRY, NOW ITS BACK TO THE PLANTATION, OR AS BIDEN TRIED TO FEAR MONGER, PUT YOU BACK IN CHAINS. ANYONE WHO BELIEVS IN THIS CRAP DOESN’T HAVE A OUNCE OF INTELLIGENCE, AND COMING FROM AN ELECTED OFFICIAL IS MORE OFFENSIVE AND FEAR MONGERING. WHO ELECTED THIS FOOL? YOU MAY HAVE YOUR DIFFERENT POLITICAL BELIEFS, BUT PUT BACK ON PLANTATIONS? C’MON GIVE ME A BREAK.
I would suggest Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) pick cotton, but I don’t think he is qualified.
I’VE GOT NEWS FOR YOU.
It wasn’t ONLY BLACKS who picked cotton;
My family PICED cotton for years as well as many other field shores,.
All through high school, we ids picked cotton and hoed fields to for school clothes and school supplies.
STOP making it sound as if ONLY BLACKS picked cotton.
ENTIRE MEXICAN FAMILIES PICKED CORRON TO EAT AND LIVE
SloJoe revived slavery. Trump did not. (Coyotes importing young girls, who wind up in prostitution. Their brothers wind up cleaning slaughterhouses after midnight.) FACT!
Johnson is describing the historical modus operandi of the Demonocrat ‘party’. You can see what occupies their minds…..CONTROL ! Remember that the KKK was formed from the Demonocrats and remember that Lincoln, who was a Republican, FREED THE SLAVES !!! If a Demonocrat can’t lie, they won’t be able to talk.
if he’d said that about Karoline Leavitt, she’d be suing him in court!!
It is ironic that such racist accusations are most often made by democrats, the very party whose members owned ALL of the slaves, started the KKK, passed all the Jim Crow laws and voted against civil rights legislation. How can I not find them to be the true “deplorables”?
Perhaps this Representative should look at the state of black education under the current framework. The focus in public education has not been education especially in inner cities where often the school administrators are black. Look at the test scores under the current system. School
Of choice nay actually give minorities a better chance at education by taking the politics and perhaps the teacher unions out of the picture.
Can you say “bull-shit” boys and girls?
Rep. Johnson is displaying the ignorance that does a disservice to the voters of Georgia and America. Hopefully the voters will wake up !
S.O.S.
Seems like most Dems go on and on criticising when it is their own policies causing the damage they talk about.
Leftists have no mandate so they call everything a Republican does “racist”. Everything seems to be “racist” to liberals.
Hank Johnson is an anti White RACIST looking for atttention, fame, and fortune.
