Democratic politicians have long wielded race-based arguments to defend policies with arguments that are questionable at best, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s recent comments on MSNBC’s All In are a perfect example. In a discussion about the potential elimination of the federal Department of Education, Walz invoked the history of Ruby Bridges and the Little Rock Nine—two major moments in the civil rights movement—suggesting that eliminating the Department of Education would undo racial integration and civil rights protections in schools.
“What I worry about is the generational change that this would make. Look, Ruby Bridges needed to be escorted into those schools and the folks who went into Little Rock because we didn’t have an Education Department that ensured her civil rights were respected. That’s gone now. And my son, those of your viewers who are out there now who have individual education plans that let them thrive and be their best people, what do they want us to do, warehouse these kids, not give them the skills? And this is going to impact local schools directly.”
On its surface, Walz’s argument appeals to the emotions of viewers by invoking historical events that most Americans recognize as pivotal in the fight for racial equality. However, it quickly becomes clear that these emotional appeals obscure the real issues at hand. By linking the potential dissolution of the Department of Education to a fear of racial regression, Walz, much like many Democrats before him, resorts to race-based fear-mongering to defend a federal bureaucracy that many believe has long outlived its usefulness.
Equating the dissolution of a federal department with a return to segregation is both disingenuous and dishonest. Civil rights protections are enshrined in laws like the Civil Rights Act and the Every Student Succeeds Act, which can easily be enforced without an expansive federal bureaucracy. The focus should not be on maintaining an outdated institution, but on refining systems to optimize educational outcomes for America’s youth.
American students have exhibited a direct decline in literacy, science, and mathematics since the Department’s establishment. The more the taxpayer has spent on education at the federal level, the more students have suffered, and so far, the Democrats have failed to offer a single coherent argument in its defense that doesn’t rely on hysterics and extreme hypotheticals.

The truth of the matter is that Walz is just TOO DUMB to be in charge of anything
Minnesota better wise up and find a good, worthy republican candidate for governor in their next election.
He said that during Womens History Month….which comes after Black History Month…segregation, anyone?
Anyway, how many pols (either party) keep their kids in the racial “jungle” of the public school systems?
Who cares what this Commie says ? Put a mussel on him !
But all this does is put the education back to the states, so his state can take up the responsibility… duh
Why would anyone listen to this idiot’s rants?
What does he think the Justice Dept. and FBI are for? Was the Dept. of Education even around at those times? Walz is living in another world, His spinning of the truth about his person and party stance was received and rejected overwhelming by the voters! Please, someone, tell him to fade away! He is no longer needed(never was) and the public would like him to be “OUTOF SIGHT AND OUT OF MIND!”.
Who really cares what this IDIOT thinks. We can all there make up our own mind. Personally he is one of the last people on earth that I would listen to for advice.
WHO CARES what Walz spews ?! He’s so full of it, it’s coming out of his mouth !
