Hunter Biden, the oft-wayward son of former President Joe Biden, has agreed to permanently relinquish his license to practice law in Washington, D.C. This decision follows his convictions on federal gun charges and tax evasion, for which he received a “generous” presidential pardon from his father in December 2024. Newsweek reports that Biden’s voluntary move to give up his D.C. law license was closely followed by Tuesday’s recommendation from the D.C. Bar’s disciplinary counsel, which urged the District of Columbia Court of Appeals to accept his disbarment—a step seen as a way to avoid protracted and potentially embarrassing proceedings rehashing his two criminal cases:

On June 11, a Delaware jury found Biden guilty of three firearm charges. Prosecutors accused him of lying about his status as a drug user when purchasing a firearm in 2018. Section 922(g)(3) of the United States Code states it is against the law for anyone who is an “unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance” to possess a firearm.

He previously pleaded not guilty to the charges and has maintained his innocence.
The suspension order was signed by Chief Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby, who was appointed to the court by former President George W. Bush. D.C. law requires that any member of the bar of the District of Columbia Court of appeals who is “convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude” may lose their law license in the district.
The Code of the District of Columbia states the following: “If a final judgment of conviction is certified to the court, the name of the member of the bar so convicted shall be struck from the roll of the members of the bar and such person shall thereafter cease to be a member. Upon the granting of a pardon to a member so convicted, the court may vacate or modify the order of disbarment.” (RELATED: Hunter Biden-Linked Associate Scores HUGE Gift From Trump)
Biden’s legal troubles escalated dramatically with his conviction in June 2024 for illegally purchasing a firearm while using drugs and lying on a federal form. Subsequently, in September 2024, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges involving $1.4 million in unpaid taxes. Although these convictions led to the suspension of his D.C. law license, his father’s pardon nullified his sentences but did not prevent the disbarment proceedings.
Despite maintaining a nonpracticing membership with the D.C. Bar and holding a suspended law license in Connecticut, Biden’s agreement to disbarment signifies a formal conclusion to his legal practice in Washington, D.C.
The New York Post provides further details:
Hunter has paid $331 yearly to maintain his membership in the DC bar, though he has never actively practiced law in DC. However, he held an “of counsel” position at the powerful Democrat-linked law firm Boies Schiller Flexner LLP during his father’s vice presidency.
Hunter’s attorney did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
The president’s son graduated from Yale Law School in 1996 and was admitted to the D.C. bar in 2007.
He currently lives in Southern California.
