Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

CHINA THREAT

NO KIDDING – China’s military expansion is reaching a dangerous tipping point. Top military leaders from the United States and China met last weekend at a forum in Singapore, where they attempted to manage mounting tensions between the superpowers. But throughout Asia, there’s a growing fear that China’s drastic military expansion will soon result in Chinese regional military superiority, which could embolden Beijing to start a war over Taiwan.

INDEED – China on wrong side of history for backing Russian interests amid war, US warns. In a call with Putin, Xi said China and Russia support each other’s “core interests concerning sovereignty and security.”

Russian-backed separatists in Luhansk said they were ready to open a humanitarian corridor to evacuate civilians from a chemical plant in Severodonetsk if Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire. An air raid hit a building sheltering civilians in Ukraine’s embattled eastern city of Lysychansk, killing at least three people.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

IRAN THREAT

NUCLEAR BREAKOUT OR ISRAELI STRIKE? Fears grow over Iran’s nuclear program as Tehran digs tunnel network. The conflict over the program may flare again as President Biden travels next month to Israel and Saudi Arabia, Iran’s two biggest regional rivals.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Conflict in Ukraine pushes global displaced to record high, UN says. Russia’s war in Ukraine has pushed global displacement figures to record levels, the U.N. refugee agency said Thursday, calling the statistics a “tragic milestone.”

NATO needs to move protection of civilians to center stage. The Ukraine war shows why the alliance’s upcoming summit cannot give short shrift to the topic of human security.

US MILITARY AND SPACE
