A new poll conducted by the Yale Institution for Social and Political Studies reveals a striking shift among America’s youngest voters—one that could have seismic implications for the future of U.S. politics. According to the Yale Youth Poll, voters aged 18 to 21 now favor Republicans by an 11.7-point margin in upcoming congressional elections, signaling a generational realignment that is already reshaping the political landscape.
Voters aged 22 to 29, meanwhile, still lean Democratic—but by a slimmer margin of just 6.4 points. The widening ideological split within Generation Z reveals a dramatic shift that helped catapult President Donald Trump back into the White House in 2024 and could set the tone for elections for years to come.
Historically, young Americans have been a bedrock of Democratic support, playing a pivotal role in Barack Obama’s victories and helping Joe Biden defeat Trump in 2020. But the tide appears to be turning. Trump’s resurgence with young voters in 2024 was no fluke—it was the leading edge of a broader shift that may upend long-held assumptions about youth and politics.
If the GOP continues to gain traction with young people, especially young men, Democrats could face an uphill battle maintaining a viable national coalition.
The Yale Youth Poll surveyed 4,100 registered voters from April 1 to April 3, including an oversample of 2,024 voters aged 18 to 29. The poll’s youth subsample carried a margin of error of just +/- 1.8 percentage points.
Among younger Republicans, Vice President JD Vance is proving to be a breakout star. With a +54 net favorability among GOP voters under 30—and +65 overall—Vance now leads early speculation for the 2028 GOP nomination, with 53% support in the primary if it were held today.
On the Democratic side, Kamala Harris remains the frontrunner with 27.5% support for a 2028 run and a +60 favorability rating. But her standing is far from dominant, reflecting a party still searching for a unifying post-Biden figure.
Meanwhile, a separate AtlasIntel poll found that Trump’s approval rating among 18–29-year-olds hit 52.7% in February, underscoring his staying power with an age group once seen as solidly opposed to him.
Despite momentum, Republicans still face challenges with young voters. A recent CBS News/YouGov poll showed more young Americans disapprove of Trump’s economic performance than approve, with 56% expressing disapproval. That suggests the GOP must navigate economic anxieties and build credibility on issues like cost of living, housing, and student debt to maintain support.
“This is a wake-up call,” said David B. Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Akron. “Young voters compose a crucial part of the Democratic base, and if that is eroding, where do they make up for that?”
Arjun Warrior, a data scientist for the Yale Youth Poll, emphasized the importance of understanding Gen Z on its own terms. “Politicians often promise things to young voters, but they can’t do that effectively if they don’t know where young voters actually stand,” he said. “That’s why polls like this are so important.”
With the 2026 midterms and 2028 presidential race on the horizon, both parties are recalibrating their outreach to the youth vote. Republicans are capitalizing on growing concerns over cultural issues, economic mobility, and institutional trust. Democrats, meanwhile, must grapple with the realization that they no longer take the youth vote for granted.
