Actress Daryl Hannah now claims that the first Trump administration deliberately obstructed her husband Neil Young’s path to U.S. citizenship, subjecting the Canadian-born musician to repeated bureaucratic hurdles.
In a recent interview, Hannah stated that officials “tried every trick in the book to mess him up,” requiring Young to undergo multiple re-interviews despite his decades-long residency and tax contributions in the United States. She described the process as “ridiculous,” noting that Young had been living in America and paying taxes since his twenties.
The New York Post provides more details:
The “Splash” actress told the BBC that Young, now a dual Canadian-American citizen, went through a bureaucratic ordeal during the first Trump administration when attempting to secure an American passport.
“They tried every trick in the book to mess him up, and made him keep coming back to be re-interviewed and re-interviewed. It’s ridiculous [because] he’s been living in America and paying taxes here since he was in his 20s,” Hannah, 64, told the outlet.
“They’ve been detaining people who have green cards or visas — which is hideous and horrifying — but they have not, so far, been refusing to let American citizens back in the country, so I don’t think that’s going to happen,” claimed “The Pope of Greenwich Village” star in the interview of current Trump policies.
Young has been a vociferous critic of the president — even suing Trump in 2020 to try and stop the campaigner in chief from playing the 1991 hit “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” at political rallies.
Young, who moved to the U.S. in the 1960s and obtained a green card in 1970, applied for citizenship in 2019 to participate in the 2020 presidential election. However, his application was delayed due to his past marijuana use, which, under a Trump-era policy, could be considered a violation of the “good moral character” requirement for naturalization.
Despite these challenges, Young became a U.S. citizen in January 2020. Nonetheless, he has expressed concerns about potential repercussions for his outspoken criticism of President Trump. In a post on his website, Young warned that he might be barred from re-entering the U.S. after his European tour, stating, “If I talk about Donald J Trump, I may be one of those returning to America who is barred or put in jail to sleep on a cement floor with an aluminum blanket.”
Young is scheduled to headline the Glastonbury Festival in June and embark on a U.S. tour in August. The couple’s experiences highlight ongoing concerns about the intersection of immigration policies and political expression.
