Mid-speech, Trump unexpectedly called Whitmer up to the podium. The moment, captured live on Fox News, caught many off guard — including Whitmer herself.
“Well, I hadn’t planned to speak,” she said with a stiff smile, stepping into the spotlight with cameras rolling and National Guard troops watching.
Progressives See a Political Trap
Whitmer’s appearance alongside Trump — and the embrace that greeted his arrival in the Wolverine State — sparked immediate backlash from wide swaths of her progressive base. On X (formerly Twitter), users slammed her for lending legitimacy to the president, whose popularity among Democrats remains at rock bottom.
Several pointed out that Whitmer never directly mentioned Trump by name during her short remarks — a signal, they argue, that she was trying to distance herself even while sharing the stage.
Still, political insiders worry the moment could haunt Whitmer if she pursues a 2028 presidential run. As AP News reported Wednesday morning, the optics of bipartisanship may not sit well with primary voters still bitter about Trump-era politics.
