Fox News host Greg Gutfeld delivered a scathing monologue Friday night, criticizing Democrats for rallying behind Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, an illegal migrant deported to El Salvador, whom he accused the left of “lionizing” in spite of alleged criminal ties.
Abrego Garcia, who was deported by the Trump administration, has come to the center of the immigration debate, with Democratic lawmakers and activists condemning his deportation and calling for his return. However, recent revelations have fueled controversy: the Department of Justice released documents tying Abrego Garcia to the violent MS-13 gang, human trafficking suspects, and other criminal allegations, including a 2022 traffic stop where he was found with eight other men in a car registered to a known human smuggler.
Gutfeld, known for his sardonic style, mocked Democrats for what he characterized as performative outrage and selective empathy. “Look, Abrego is a Maryland man, right? Ted Bundy is a dating expert. The Unabomber is a pen pal. Charles Manson, family man,” he quipped. “They turned him into, I don’t know, Rosa Parks with tats.”
The Gutfeld! host drew a parallel between the media reaction to Abrego Garcia and other high-profile incidents involving questionable narratives. “We knew it was inevitable. Just like Jussie Smollett. We had to bite our tongues and let the Dems work through their five stages of performative outrage,” he said. “But we knew it was going to happen. And then they pivot. Suddenly it’s not about the Maryland dad. It’s about all of us.”
The Trump administration has acknowledged an error in the initial deportation paperwork but maintains that Abrego Garcia’s ties to criminal networks justify his continued detention in El Salvador’s maximum-security prison, a facility known for housing the country’s most dangerous gang members.
Despite mounting evidence of his criminal past, progressive lawmakers have traveled to El Salvador on his behalf, framing Abrego Garcia as a victim.
Gutfeld argued that this pattern is nothing new: “They always seem to pick the wrong side on the wrong hill. Trans athletes, left-wing congressmen who let dogs die, a guy who assassinates a CEO, pro-Hamas protesters, BLM rioters, looters who are only trying to get bread, the wife-beating gangbanger. If you want to find a scumbag, just look for the Democrat that’s defending him.”
He contrasted that with who he says the left demonizes: “Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Daniel Penny — men who actually try to do good.”
Fox News also reported that ICE agents had been notified of Abrego Garcia during the 2022 traffic stop, but failed to detain him during Joe Biden’s tenure. This failure is one example of what conservatives point to, arguing that lax enforcement has undermined public safety.
Gutfeld closed his remarks with a broader indictment of the political left: “I don’t believe the Dems actually care about this guy. They don’t care about the victims. They care about scoring virtue points and political leverage. Who’s the real victim? They only care if it’s them.”
