The FBI has launched a formal criminal investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, zeroing in on possible mortgage fraud connected to her personal real estate holdings in Brooklyn, New York, and Norfolk, Virginia. The case stems from a referral by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which alleges James misrepresented key property and residency details to secure more favorable mortgage terms. Allegations Involving Residency and Property Misclassification
-Virginia Residence Discrepancy: Investigators are examining claims that James listed a Norfolk property as her primary residence on mortgage documents. If proven, that claim could violate both federal lending rules and New York’s own residency requirements for elected officials.
-Brooklyn Property Dispute: James is also accused of describing her Brooklyn brownstone as a four-unit building on mortgage applications. However, official records reportedly classify it as a five-unit structure. The classification matters, as four units or fewer can qualify for more lenient residential loan terms under federal guidelines.
These misstatements, if intentional, could constitute violations of federal statutes involving false statements to financial institutions.
In announcing the probe, US Attorney John A. Sarcone III took a swipe at James’s 2018 campaign rhetoric about investigating President Donald Trump.
The US attorney said James “unethically ran around the state campaigning on getting Donald Trump,” and essentially accused her of finding a criminal target without an alleged crime.
Dan Abrams, who founded Mediaite, said after Pulte’s referral was made public that he was surprised it had not gotten more traction in the media.
“When I first heard that the attorney general had been referred, there was a criminal referral made by the director of the federal Housing and Finance Agency, my initial response was, ‘Oh boy, here we go. Trump is just weaponizing the departments and in this case making a reference to the DOJ, and I’m sure this was all nonsense,’” he said.
“But then I actually read what they were alleging,” he continued. “This is real. This is serious, and I think this could mean big trouble for the attorney general.”
Legal Representation and Budget Controversy
James has retained high-profile attorney Abbe Lowell, known for representing Hunter Biden and Jared Kushner, to lead her defense. Notably, the funding for her legal team is coming from a mix of state taxpayer dollars and a private legal defense fund. The use of a $10 million provision in the New York state budget — originally intended to cover legal fees for public officials facing federal investigations — has already sparked political backlash. James has publicly dismissed the investigation as a partisan attack, framing it as retaliation for her high-profile legal battle against Donald Trump. In February 2024, James secured a $454 million civil fraud judgment against the former president and the Trump Organization. That case was pursued under New York’s Executive Law § 63(12), which allows civil fraud suits without having to prove intent.
Ironically, some of the allegations now facing James — particularly the potential misrepresentation of property details — mirror the charges she once brought against Trump, a point not lost on her critics.
Where the Case Stands Now
No formal charges have been filed against James, and the investigation remains in its early stages. However, the involvement of a grand jury suggests federal prosecutors are actively collecting evidence and weighing possible indictments.

No probing necessary. The evidence is in black and white with her signatures all over it. She was thinking. I’m a NY DA as well as a huge black woman and I can get away with lying about what ever I want to. People who live in glass houses should not be throwing stones. If all this does come to fruitation, I hope that she gets fired as a DA and since she alledgedly lied on mortage and property description records to lower her taxes, as an “Officer of the Court”, she should be disbarred or at mimum suspended for a period of not less than 5 to 10 years. After all that then we get down to, if she if found guilty, a civil penalty and possible detention in jail.
She is no better than anyone else, but we know nothing will happen to big mouth corrupted democrats. Remember Ms. James no one is above the law, you are no one special,
