Representative Summer Lee (D-Pa.) introduced a resolution on Thursday calling for the U.S. government to spend trillions of dollars on reparations for Black Americans. The resolution, titled the “Reparations Now Resolution,” claims to address the “lasting impact of slavery” and racially discriminatory laws, with Lee framing reparations as both a “moral and legal obligation.”
Lee’s push for reparations comes after years of failed efforts from activists and lawmakers, who insist on compensation for Black Americans as a form of justice for the historical wrongs committed during slavery and segregation.
“This is a moment in time where societies are shaped, and new societies are built,” said Lee at a Capitol Hill event on Tuesday titled “Why We Can’t Wait: Advancing Reparative Justice in Our Lifetime.” “We should be the ones who are shaping it,” she added, emphasizing the belief that reparations should be part of the effort to rebuild a more equitable society.
Referring to the Trump administration’s policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), Lee said that it was easy for a president to dismantle DEI programs, but the fight to “restore Black folks” required much more substantial action.
“It took nothing but a stroke of a pen for President Trump to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs across the federal government,” Lee said. “That’s why we recognize that the fight to restore black folks has to be so much more substantive.”
Lee’s resolution comes amid an ongoing conversation in Congress about reparations and the historical injustices faced by Black Americans. Earlier this year, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) introduced a bill aimed at creating a federal commission to study the effects of slavery and other forms of racial injustice, with the eventual goal of developing concrete proposals for reparations. Pressley described the moment as one of “anti-Blackness on steroids” and vowed that she and her colleagues would “not back down in our pursuit of racial justice.”
Trillions in Reparations
The Reparations Now Resolution is expected to propose an unprecedented investment in addressing racial disparities in housing, education, healthcare, and wealth. Though details of the resolution are still being analyzed, Lee’s plan calls for spending that could total trillions of dollars, aiming to right the historical wrongs faced by Black Americans. This would include direct financial compensation for descendants of enslaved people, as well as investments in education, job training, health care access, and housing assistance.
“We cannot allow the United States to move forward without acknowledging the debt owed to Black Americans,” Lee said. “This country built its wealth on the backs of Black slaves, and we cannot pretend that these harms haven’t left deep scars that still affect our communities today.”
Growing Momentum for Reparations
Lee and Pressley are part of a broader effort, particularly among Democratic lawmakers, to push reparations onto the national stage. The push for reparations has gained traction in various cities and states, including California, where a task force was created to explore reparations proposals. In addition to Lee and Pressley’s legislative efforts, cities such as San Francisco and cities in Illinois have initiated local reparations programs.
Supporters of reparations argue that it is a necessary step toward addressing the generational impact of racism, which has left Black Americans at a disadvantage in almost every area of life. Critics, however, question the feasibility of such a massive financial investment and argue that reparations would be difficult to fairly implement.
Looking Ahead
As the debate over reparations continues, Lee’s resolution will likely spark further discussions in Congress about how to address racial inequalities in the U.S. While Lee and Pressley are leading the charge, their efforts are part of a larger movement that includes activists, local governments, and other lawmakers pushing for reparations as a means of atonement and a way to build a more equitable future for Black Americans.

– Democrat President Woodrow Wilson publicly endorsed, encouraged and utilized the KKK Thugs (started by Southern Democrats and Confederates) to harass & control both Blacks and Republicans as well as to suppress their votes.
