Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert comic strip and frequent commentator on politics and media, has announced he’s battling a terminal illness. In a recent episode of his podcast, Real Coffee with Scott Adams, the 67-year-old said he’s been diagnosed with a highly aggressive form of prostate cancer — the same type former President Joe Biden disclosed on Sunday.
Like Biden, Adams said the cancer has already spread to his bones. “So my life expectancy is maybe the summer,” he said. “I expect to be checking out from this domain sometime this summer.”
The disease in question is high-grade, hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, scored at 9 on the Gleason scale — the top end of aggressiveness. As The Post Millennial reports, Adams noted that he’s known about his condition longer than Biden has been public with his:
Adams said the cancer has already reached “intolerable” levels and that he does not have “good days,” and that “every day is a nightmare, the evening is even worse.”
“I’m in pain, and I’m always in pain. The pain moves around to different parts of my body. I’ve been using a walker to walk for months now. So, it’s basically intolerable.
“You might wonder why it took so long for me to tell you,” Adams said, “and I think I owe you an answer to that. Number one, it would change my life because everybody would start treating me like the cancer guy. There’s no second way that goes, once you go public, you’re just the dying cancer guy. And I didn’t want you to have to think about it. And I didn’t want to have to think about it.”
He said he wasn’t lying when he said his mobility issues were arthritis and back-related, “but it turns out that, as bad luck would have it, I have arthritis in the same place, you know, my disks are bad in my back, but also a tumor. So one of my tumors is in the same place. So I’ve got the sort of triple whammy.”
Adams said he would continue his morning show as long as possible.
He didn’t go into treatment details. The focus of his podcast remarks was the prognosis and the reality he’s facing.
The disclosure has sparked discussion across social media and health circles about advanced prostate cancer and the importance of early testing.
