The Trump administration has revoked Harvard University’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), effectively blocking the university from enrolling new international students. This dramatic step marks the latest flashpoint in a deepening standoff between Harvard and the federal government — one driven by disputes over campus activism, student privacy, and institutional autonomy.
DHS Demands and Harvard’s Defiance
At the center of the conflict is a demand from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS): Harvard was asked to provide detailed records of international students’ activities, including their participation in campus protests. The university’s decision to only partially comply prompted the revocation of its SEVP certification, jeopardizing the legal status of thousands of international students. The move has also raised concerns about Harvard’s global partnerships and academic reach.
The administration notified Harvard about the decision after a back-and-forth in recent days over the legality of a sprawling records request as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s investigation, according to three people with knowledge of the negotiations.
“I am writing to inform you that effective immediately, Harvard University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification is revoked,” according to a letter sent to the university by Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary. A copy of the letter was obtained by The New York Times.
Spokesmen for the Department of Homeland Security and Harvard did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Financial Fallout and Legal Counterattack
Amid the administration’s efforts to pressure the university into compliance, Harvard President Alan Garber announced a 25% pay cut in a symbolic gesture acknowledging the institution’s financial strain. The administration’s actions have also sparked a legal battle: Harvard is suing the federal government, challenging the constitutionality of both the funding freeze and what it describes as politically motivated retaliation.
Broader Campaign Against Higher Education
This is not an isolated incident. Thursday’s announcement fits into a broader pattern of aggressive federal oversight targeting elite academic institutions. The Trump administration has criticized and threatened universities over diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and campus activism tied to international issues. Harvard has faced additional threats, including the potential loss of its tax-exempt status and over $2.5 billion in federal funding cuts.
What’s at Stake
The revocation of Harvard’s SEVP certification reflects more than a dispute over paperwork — it reveals a strategic use of federal leverage to shape university policies. For international students, the implications are immediate and personal. For U.S. higher education, the clash signals a growing trend: federal influence extending deeper into academic freedom and university governance.

This dispute is so easy fro univertities to comply with, eliminate DEI and all is good. What is DEI….plain and simple it is discrimination. These are US universities and US students should be first in line to get admitted, foreigners come in last. Subjects that promote discrimination, sexual divisions, or unAmerican activity MUST be eliminated if they want any Federal Money. As long as they want to teach these subject they are entitled to do so BUT without any Federal or many even state money.
First step only. Columbia and other elite institutions should also be on the list. Kick out all the international students. No one wants to say it out loud, but radial middle east students should not be permitted into the country under the shield/rubric “student”!
STUDENT CHINESE spies discovered in multiple Universities and the author states this nonsens:
“For U.S. higher education, the clash signals a growing trend: federal influence extending deeper into academic freedom and university governance.”
The goverment simply doesn’t want FOREIGN STUDENT SPIES in the USA working on R&D, AI, etc. Oh yeah, AND, CCP donates MILLIONS to various Universities. As do other countries.
Here’s a thought, these foreign students can just study at their own universities.
Btw, I LIVE in Mexico as an ex=pat and was an exchange student to Argentina, in 1974, the year Peron died. So, speaking from experience. Many foreign countries have great colleges. In fact, look at India. They turn our medical doctors by the 1000’s.
AND, did you know, hat 5`1% of US citizens study medical abroad b/c its easier to pass the studies. Then those Citizens come back and work in the USA its ALL ABOUT the $$$ you can make in the USA.
Evidently the “SEVP certification” has not been working out to encourage the “Best of the Best” to come to America and create a “Brain drain” on the rest of the world.
Instead, Harvard is importing agitators and potential terrorists.
