In the latest example of historical revisionism masquerading as inclusive education, a prominent UK educational charity is urging school tutors to discard traditional understandings of the Viking era in favor of a politically charged “decolonised narrative.” According to guidance issued by The Brilliant Club, a charity that places PhD students in state schools to support disadvantaged pupils, educators should now teach that “Vikings were not all white” and were “a very diverse group of people”—claims based more on modern ideological trends than serious historical scholarship.
The charity’s “decolonising your course” toolkits instruct tutors to move away from “Eurocentric” interpretations and instead emphasize narratives that students can “relate to.” In practice, this means reimagining Viking society as multicultural, religiously varied, and in some cases, potentially Islamic—based on speculative interpretations of artifacts like Islamic coins found in burial sites. The goal, according to the guide, is to ensure pupils “see themselves represented positively” in the curriculum.
The attempt to present the Vikings—a seafaring Scandinavian warrior culture from the 8th to 11th centuries—as a racially diverse, religiously plural society appears to stem more from present-day identity politics than archaeological fact. While trade with the Islamic world is well-documented, there is no credible evidence that a significant number of Vikings converted to Islam or that their society reflected the multicultural mosaic described in the guide.
Even the 2020 genetic study from the University of Cambridge, often cited to support these claims, merely showed that Viking DNA included some genetic input from outside Scandinavia—most notably from neighboring European regions and parts of what is now Russia. That limited diversity within a largely ethnically cohesive group is being used to prop up a sweeping ideological narrative that Vikings were not “all white” is an egregious distortion of historical nuance.
The Brilliant Club’s guide doesn’t stop at the Viking age. It urges tutors to reframe major world developments through a “decolonized” lens, including the spread of democracy—which it describes not as a force for liberty, but as a tool for Western exploitation and domination. Romantic literature is to be taught not through its leading poets—Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron—but via unnamed alternatives who better fit today’s racial and class identity quotas.
Even the term “Anglo-Saxon” is flagged as problematic due to alleged “associations” with white nationalism—despite its widespread, legitimate historical use, including by Alfred the Great himself. Universities such as Cambridge and Nottingham have already begun purging the term, replacing it with “early medieval England,” further signaling that this is less about accuracy and more about appeasing contemporary ideological sensitivities.
The narrative being pushed here—one in which whiteness must be de-centered and Western civilization portrayed primarily through the lens of oppression—is not about education. It’s about indoctrination.
History must remain rooted in evidence, not ideology. When we begin reshaping foundational cultural narratives—like who the Vikings were—not on the basis of facts but on how well they serve modern political movements, we abandon history altogether and enter the realm of propaganda.
If Britain’s education system becomes a vehicle for rewriting history to suit modern political tastes, one must ask: what’s the next chapter to be rewritten, and at what cost to historical integrity?
