A startling new report has revealed that convicted pedophiles in Britain’s prison system are converting to Islam to gain protection from powerful Islamist gangs—a trend that has ignited concerns over radicalisation and loss of institutional control within the nation’s jails.
Former prison governor Ian Acheson, commissioned by Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick, uncovered what he describes as an increasingly dangerous environment where prison authorities are ceding control to ideological and criminal networks. His investigation suggests that some of the most reviled offenders in the prison hierarchy—those convicted of sex crimes against children—are now walking freely among the general prison population under the protection of Muslim gangs.
“We’re now seeing them walking openly in normal location because they’ve come under the protection of Muslim gangs,” Acheson told GB News. “They used to be isolated to protect them from retaliation, but that’s changing.”
Radicalization Risks Mounting
The revelations highlight a growing nexus between ideological extremism and organized crime inside British prisons. According to Acheson, there are currently around 230 convicted terrorist offenders incarcerated in the UK, along with a broader group considered vulnerable to radicalization. These individuals are frequently housed near or among other criminal networks, forming what Acheson described as a potentially explosive mix.
“Where those two groups are together, it is absolutely rational to think they will cooperate in some way,” he said. “Then you have a serious problem.”
The report also found that prison staff have become increasingly compromised, operating in a “culture of appeasement” towards violent Islamist factions. Attacks on prison officers are reportedly rising, with high-profile cases like that of Axel Rudakubana—who allegedly assaulted a prison officer with boiling water—making headlines.
Systemic Failures and Security Breaches
Acheson’s assessment is blunt: the system is failing. He cited numerous systemic issues, including inactive CCTV systems, the absence of working drone defences at high-security facilities, and a general breakdown in discipline and authority. This, he warned, not only facilitates the smuggling of contraband like mobile phones and drugs but raises the terrifying possibility of weapons being introduced into the prison ecosystem.
“The nightmare scenario would be weapons, pistols and ammunition getting to Islamist prisoners,” Acheson said. “I’m thinking about that and worrying about it… and you can be absolutely sure terrorists inside prison are as well.”
Calls for Segregation and Reform
Back in 2016, Acheson advocated for “separation centres” to isolate radical and high-risk inmates from the general prison population. However, he said the plan was “set up to fail” and inadequately implemented. Today, he believes these centres—or similar secure arrangements—are more necessary than ever.
“I think there needs to be a different solution for them,” he warned. “If we don’t have that solution… I think the prospect of a prison officer being murdered on duty is closer than it’s ever been.”
Political and Public Alarm
The report has drawn fierce responses from politicians and members of the public alike. Robert Jenrick, who commissioned the review, called the situation “intolerable” and is pushing for swift action to restore order and prevent further radicalization within prisons.
