The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) publicly rebuked reality TV star Kim Kardashian on Wednesday after she criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deporting illegal immigrants with criminal convictions.
Kardashian, who has previously used her celebrity platform to advocate for prison reform and clemency cases, took aim at ICE during a widely shared Instagram story, claiming federal agents were “ripping hardworking people from their families in inhumane ways” and encouraging her millions of followers to protest ongoing deportations.
But DHS officials quickly pushed back, accusing Kardashian of spreading misleading information and downplaying the severity of the crimes committed by many of those being deported.
“@KimKardashian, which one of these convicted child molesters, murderers, drug traffickers and rapists would you like to stay in the country?” wrote Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
McLaughlin’s post included mugshots and summaries of four individuals recently apprehended by ICE in the Los Angeles area, all of whom had prior convictions for violent or predatory crimes.
“These are just a few of the convicted illegal criminals who have been picked up in the last 72 hours,” McLaughlin added. “ICE is enforcing the law by targeting individuals who pose real threats to public safety.”
Contrary to Kardashian’s claims, DHS officials have emphasized that ICE operations are focused on individuals with existing deportation orders—typically due to felony convictions or other significant criminal records.
Just last week, ICE confirmed the arrest and removal of 142 criminal aliens from the Houston metro area. Those apprehended had convictions including armed robbery, sexual assault of minors, drug trafficking, and attempted murder.
Kardashian’s post comes amid intensifying protests in major cities like Los Angeles and New York, where left-wing activists and open-borders groups have rallied against ICE’s enforcement operations. The protests, some of which have turned violent, follow a wave of federal immigration actions that have netted hundreds of arrests across sanctuary cities in recent weeks.
Critics say celebrities like Kardashian are playing a dangerous role in fanning public outrage without acknowledging the criminal backgrounds of many deportees.
When asked for clarification on whether she supported deportation for violent felons, Kardashian declined to respond directly but reiterated her call for “humane immigration reform.”
The Kardashian-DHS spat reflects a larger national divide over immigration enforcement — particularly in blue states like California, where officials and activists have pushed to limit cooperation with federal authorities.
