Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

A Comeback in Red, White, and Mustard

Joey Chestnut — the most dominant figure in competitive eating — is officially back in the lineup for Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest after a year-long absence. Chestnut was barred from the 2024 competition following a high-profile dispute over his endorsement of Impossible Foods, a plant-based brand viewed as a direct competitor by event organizers.

Thankfully, that standoff is now over. Chestnut has signed a new three-year deal with Nathan’s and Major League Eating (MLE), clearing the way for his return to the Coney Island stage —where his legendary gluttony first captured the nation’s attention.

On social media, Chestnut expressed enthusiasm for the resolution and his return to what he called a deeply personal tradition. “This event means the world to me,” he wrote. “It’s a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life.”

Fox News has the latest on Chestnut’s return to the competitive eating stage:

“While I have and continue to partner with a variety of companies, including some in the plant-based space, those relationships were never a conflict with my love for hot dogs. To be clear: Nathan’s is the only hot dog company I’ve ever worked with.

“I respect that there were differences in interpretation, but I’m grateful we’ve been able to find common ground. I’m excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do, and celebrating the Fourth of July with hot dogs in my hands! Stay hungry!”

His absence last year didn’t keep him out of the spotlight. Chestnut took part in a Netflix special facing off against longtime rival Takeru Kobayashi, where he set a personal record by consuming 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes — surpassing his official contest best.

Strong Competition Awaits

But Chestnut won’t be handed the internationally coveted Mustard Belt — he’ll have to earn it. This year’s field includes some heavy hitters:

  • Patrick Bertoletti, who claimed the 2024 title during Chestnut’s absence with a 58-dog performance.
  • Geoffrey Esper, a perennial top contender who qualified with 43 hot dogs in ten minutes.

The reunion of Chestnut and Coney Island raises the stakes for what’s already one of the most-watched July 4th events in the country.

What’s Next: Fireworks, Frankfurters, and a Fight for History

The 16-time champion returns with a score to settle and a title to reclaim. With ratings expected to spike and fan anticipation running high, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is shaping up to be more than a novelty spectacle — it’s a fight for legacy.

Rest assured, all eyes will be on the boardwalk this Independence Day.
