Former Secretary of State John Kerry admitted this week that Democrats mishandled the immigration issue—and even went so far as to say that President Donald Trump “was right” about the border.
In an interview Thursday with the BBC, Kerry—who served under President Obama and was the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee—claimed that he personally told President Joe Biden that the party had dropped the ball.
The former diplomat added a warning seldom heard from Democratic leadership: “Without a border protected, you don’t have a nation.”
Kerry’s comments come amid a groundswell of frustration with the Democratic Party’s handling of immigration—one of the defining issues of the 2024 presidential election, which saw Trump defeat Kamala Harris in a dramatic return to the White House.
While immigration has long been a point of contention between the two parties, Kerry’s blunt assessment cuts through the partisan fog and validates what millions of Americans have argued for years: the crisis at the southern border was preventable and largely a policy failure.
“President Trump was right,” Kerry said. “And the reality is, we all should have been right.”
That acknowledgment is likely to inflame tensions within the Democratic Party, where support for border enforcement has often been portrayed as harsh or xenophobic. But with record numbers of illegal crossings, public opinion has shifted sharply, and many voters—especially independents—now back real action on border security.
Kerry’s remarks are not without basis. Under President Biden, over 10 million illegal aliens entered the United States, including approximately 2 million known “gotaways”—individuals who evaded Border Patrol but were detected by surveillance.
According to ICE data from 2024, the agency released more than 662,000 criminal illegal aliens into the U.S. interior. Among them, over 435,000 had already been convicted of crimes, with another 226,000 facing pending charges.
That deluge coincided with tragic headlines across the country, such as the brutal murders of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley and Maryland mother Rachel Morin, both at the hands of illegal aliens.
Since retaking office, President Trump has reversed course on immigration, directing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and former ICE Director Tom Homan—now serving as Border Czar—to prioritize enforcement and removals, particularly of criminal illegal aliens.
“The Biden administration let in people from all over the world that are horrible individuals,” Noem told Fox News on Thursday. “We are now focused on removing them, restoring safety, and respecting the rule of law.”
DHS has reportedly removed hundreds of known or suspected terrorists, according to Noem, and ICE has carried out targeted arrests across the country—drawing national attention, including backlash from left-wing leaders like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who attempted to disrupt an ICE operation in her city.
ICE now reports a 700% increase in assaults on its agents, a statistic Noem cited as proof of the dangerous environment federal officers now face.
“Our communities are getting safer every single day,” she said. “But these targeted attacks against our officers are unacceptable.”
On social media, Noem reaffirmed support for law enforcement: “We will never abandon you. We are so grateful to the men and women on the front lines of this fight!”
Kerry’s surprising admission may be more than just political hindsight. It reflects a growing recognition—even among establishment Democrats—that refusing to secure the border is politically unsustainable and morally indefensible.
For years, critics warned that progressive immigration policies were eroding public safety, undermining legal immigration, and fracturing national unity. Those warnings were often dismissed as alarmist or xenophobic.
If nothing else, Kerry’s remarks may represent a turning point in the national conversation where rhetoric gave way to reality.
With the 2026 midterms approaching and Democrats trying to recalibrate, the question remains: Will the rest of the party listen, or will they double down on the policies that helped cost them the White House?
