In a candid interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) called on her own party to take a firmer and more honest approach to immigration policy, accusing Democrats of being “scared” to confront difficult truths out of fear of offending advocacy groups and progressive allies.
Slotkin, a centrist and former intelligence official, said both parties have mismanaged the immigration issue — with Republicans using it to stoke fear, and Democrats avoiding hard conversations.
“The Republicans are fomenting anti-immigrant hate as a policy and a strategy,” Slotkin said. “And Democrats are so scared of offending either immigration groups or people to the left of them… They’re concerned about saying: ‘No, not everyone gets to be here. Not everyone has the right to live in the United States, and we, like every other country in the world, get to know who and what is coming across our borders.’”
A Call for Realism on Immigration
Slotkin said that immigrants are vital to the U.S. economy and society — a view shared by many Americans, she said — but emphasized that most voters also support legal immigration through well-regulated and secure channels.
“That kind of clamping down with rules tends to make a lot of my Democratic colleagues really nervous,” she added.
Slotkin’s remarks reflect a growing concern among moderate Democrats that their party is out of touch with key segments of the electorate on issues like immigration and border security. She pointed to the 2024 election results as an example, noting surprising shifts in Latino voter support toward President Donald Trump — a trend she believes exposed disconnects between advocacy groups and actual constituents.
“Some of these groups were trotting around Washington saying they represent the immigrant community, and they clearly did not,” she said. “We saw that in real time in this last election.”
Criticism of Party Messaging
Slotkin didn’t stop at immigration. She also criticized her party’s broader communication style, arguing that Democrats have lost their “alpha-energy” — a phrase she used to describe emotional leadership and boldness.
“We respond to people’s pain with a long list of wonky policies,” she said. “Alpha energy is synonymous with being bold. Call the tough play, take a risk, be bold. And don’t be so damn scared of your own shadow.”
Her comments suggest frustration with what some Democrats see as overly cautious messaging and an unwillingness to tackle politically sensitive issues directly, especially when facing criticism from the party’s progressive wing.
A National Voice
Slotkin, who delivered the Democratic response to Trump’s joint session address to Congress in March, has become an increasingly prominent voice among moderate Democrats. In her response, she criticized Trump’s foreign policy.
“We all want an end to the war in Ukraine,” she said at the time. “But Reagan understood that true strength required America to combine our military and economic might with moral clarity. As a Cold War kid, I’m thankful it was Reagan and not Trump in office in the 1980s. Trump would have lost us the Cold War.”
A Shift in Democratic Strategy?
Slotkin’s remarks may signal a brewing internal debate within the Democratic Party, as lawmakers prepare for the 2026 midterms and navigate how best to balance progressive priorities with broader voter sentiment.
While she remains a Democrat, Slotkin’s comments are likely to resonate with independent and swing voters — as well as with liberals seeking a more centrist, pragmatic path forward.

President Trump is acting on the MANDATES given to him by the voters who elected him into office; one of them was to CLEAR THE COUNTRY of the hundreds of MILLIONS of criminal illegals from close to 300 countries that the Democrats under Joe Biden INVITED into the country with their OPEN BORDERS for four years.
Another one was to CLEAN UP THE RAMPANT and restore accountability to the Federal Federal Government by cleaning up employment rolls which were full of a surplus of INCOMPETENT employees draining taxpayers coffers year after hear. In other words, to bring ACCOUNTABIITY to am out of control government
LOSE the DRAMA; WE the citizens are DONE with tha , and WE want OUR country back.
