Police in Crystal Lake responded to a troubling incident this week when a child discovered a firearm on the playground of South Elementary School, located at 601 Golf Road. The incident occurred after school hours on Tuesday around 3:50 p.m.

Investigators determined that 45-year-old George Kiska, a concealed carry license holder and local resident, had negligently dropped the firearm while at the playground with his own child. Another child playing nearby found the firearm and immediately informed a parent. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the situation was quickly brought under control.
Kiska was still present with his child when police arrived. He was cited for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in a School Zone, a charge that reflects strict laws regarding firearms on or near school property, regardless of whether school is in session.
Illinois law prohibits firearms on school grounds without specific exemptions, even for those who hold valid concealed carry licenses. In this case, although Kiska did not appear to have malicious intent, the presence of the firearm in a school zone still constituted a legal violation.
The Importance of Secure Firearm Handling Around Children
This incident shows us the critical responsibility that comes with concealed carry. When children are involved, that responsibility becomes even more significant. A properly holstered firearm should never fall out, especially in public areas. Gun owners should routinely check their holsters, retention systems, and placement to ensure secure carry, particularly when active or moving around with children.
While concealed carry can be a powerful means of personal protection, it comes with legal and ethical responsibilities that cannot be overlooked. Being situationally aware and double-checking your gear is essential.

The parents would teach their young kids about Firearms when they are young and we all wouldn’t have to worry about that kind of thing so much.
