In the wake of the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, a growing number of local officials—primarily in Democratic-led municipalities—have openly defied proclamations from President Donald Trump and several governors to lower flags to half-staff in Kirk’s honor.
President Trump ordered all American flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on September 14 to honor Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a campus event in Utah on Wednesday. Several governors followed suit with state proclamations. However, some local leaders have refused to comply—adding new fire to the national debate over political respect, unity, and selective mourning.
Johnson County, Iowa: “I Will Not Grant Honors”
In Johnson County, Iowa, Chairman Jon Green of the Board of Supervisors made headlines after publicly announcing he would defy Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds’ directive to lower flags.
“I will not grant Johnson County honors to a man who made it his life’s mission to denigrate so many of the constituents I have sworn an oath to protect,” Green wrote on Facebook. “I will accept any consequence, whether legal or electoral, for my decision. It is mine alone.”
Gov. Reynolds responded swiftly, calling Green’s defiance “disgraceful” and accusing him of putting politics above decency during a time of national mourning.
Aurora, Illinois: Mayor Overrides Federal and State Proclamations
In Aurora, Illinois, Mayor John Laesch took similar action, reportedly ordering city buildings to fly flags at full-staff, despite directives from both President Trump and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
Internal communications from the Aurora Fire Department confirmed the decision. A memo from Fire Chief David McCabe instructed personnel to raise flags to full-staff and warned that any effort to lower them again would be seen as “a violation of a direct order.”
“In flagrant disregard for unity, the mayor and chief raised the flags, chasing cheap political points over national mourning,” said Franck Ricci, a retired firefighter and political commentator who posted the memo to social media.
While Gov. Pritzker’s proclamation avoided naming Kirk directly—referring only to “victims of political violence”—he still called for a period of mourning through September 14. Mayor Laesch justified his decision by insisting his administration was focusing on September 11th memorials.
Los Angeles and Others Join the Pushback
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, also a Democrat, reportedly ordered flags at city buildings to remain at full-staff as well. No official explanation has been issued from her office as of press time.
The symbolic refusals are drawing sharp criticism from Republicans and conservative leaders, especially given that Charlie Kirk was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, just outside of Aurora.
Growing Divisions in Mourning
Though both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have condemned Kirk’s assassination and expressed condolences to his family, these flag-related incidents reveal the deepening fractures in how political figures are remembered—or ignored—depending on ideological alignment.
Conservative critics argue that had the victim been a prominent liberal activist, the response from local Democratic officials would have been dramatically different.
What Happens Next
President Trump, who called Kirk “a martyr for truth and freedom”, is set to attend Kirk’s funeral later this week. He has remained critical of what he called “left-wing efforts to politicize even death itself.”
Charlie Kirk’s funeral will be held in Phoenix, Arizona. Flags at all federal buildings will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14—at least in jurisdictions that choose to comply.
