In a controversial Sunday interview on MSNBC, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) drew backlash after comparing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to “slave patrols” and downplaying violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants — days after referring to a murder victim as a “random dead person” during a House hearing.
Appearing on MSNBC’s Velshi, Crockett argued that Americans should focus less on “isolated” examples of migrant crime and more on what she claimed was a greater threat from “white supremacists.”
“As somebody who understands history, when I see ICE, I see slave patrols,” Crockett told host Ali Velshi.
The remark came just days after the Supreme Court lifted restrictions on ICE’s authority in Los Angeles, allowing agents to conduct broader immigration raids.
“For Every Immigrant You Talk About, I’ll Raise You White Supremacists”
During the segment, Crockett responded to criticism over her earlier comments in a House Judiciary Committee markup session, where she referred to Kayla Hamilton, a 20-year-old woman raped and murdered by an illegal immigrant MS-13 gang member, as a “random dead person.”
Doubling down, Crockett accused conservatives of “cherry-picking” examples of immigrant crime and suggested white supremacists commit more violence.
“You’re going to say there was this one immigrant who was here illegally, and they killed one person,” she said. “Well, for every immigrant you have an example of, I’ll raise you at least two to five white supremacists — if not more.”
Her comments sparked immediate backlash online, with critics accusing Crockett of dehumanizing victims of violent crime and attempting to deflect from the issue of border security.
ICE: Thousands of Illegal Immigrants Have Violent Criminal Histories
Crockett’s remarks also contradict ICE data. As of September 2024, ICE reported 13,000 convicted murderers on its docket, along with 1,845 individuals with pending homicide charges. More than 662,000 illegal immigrants in ICE’s system have documented criminal histories, including violent offenses both in the United States and abroad.
Still, Crockett insisted law enforcement must be guided by “facts and data,” claiming ICE operates in ways reminiscent of historical slave patrols — a claim she connected to the origins of American policing.
“If you know the history of policing in this country, then you understand that they were born out of slave patrols,” Crockett said. “Now with the Supreme Court saying this [about ICE raids], it’s almost like you can just go grab them up.”
Crockett’s History of Controversy
Crockett has a long record of making incendiary statements. Last year, she famously insulted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on the House floor, calling her “bleach-blonde, bad-built, butch-bodied” after Greene mocked her appearance.
The Texas Democrat has also defended comparing Donald Trump to Hitler, even in the wake of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk less than a week ago.
